Chapter Twenty-One.

I sat there, shocked to what my mother had just told me. Alex’s father was dead.

My mother had got a phone call of Madison this morning, she couldn’t understand her at first but when she did, she burst out crying too. The doctors had said he would be okay, how could he be dead? We’re flying out for the funeral in a few days. I didn’t want to go because I hate funerals, but I would like to see Alex, but not when he’s upset.

“Honey, we’re leaving tomorrow, I have to go and support Madison,” my mother said as she walked into my room and pointed at me, then left quickly.

“Uh, yeah okay” I shouted after her. I reached under the bed and got my suitcase out. I went to the wardrobe and got out a nice black dress for the funeral and matched them with a pair of black pumps. I grabbed some shorts, jeans and tops and put them on top of the dress. Then I grabbed my favorite shoes, my converse that Alex had bought me.

It had been a week since I had left Hollywood and I was already going back, but this time it wasn’t a good excuse to go. Alex and I had been emailing each other ever since I left but he never mentioned anything about his father. But I guess he wouldn’t really want to talk about it, I know I wouldn’t.

After sorting my suitcase out I went downstairs to see how my parents were doing, my mother was in the kitchen cooking but she had a spoon in one hand and a tissue covered in mascara in the other.

“Mum, are you okay?” I said approaching her slowly, she turned around and smiled, well tried to, she couldn’t cover the sadness in her eyes.

“Yeah, I’m fine, it just hit me all of a sudden, I didn’t expect him to die and Madison was all on her own with those poor kids, have you spoken to Alex?” That made me feel guilty, it was my fault Madison was on her own because I asked to leave a week early for my own selfish purposes. I slumped down to the floor, sliding down the kitchen cupboard on my way.

“What’s the matter?” my mother said, sitting down next to me.

“Nothing” I said getting up, I grabbed the phone and dialed Alex’s number.

“Alex?” I said as a low, mumbled, male voice spoke.

“Yeah, who’s this?” he said coughing after he spoke. I froze he didn’t recognize me, what if he’d gotten over me? What if he didn’t want to talk to me?

“Hello? Hello?” he said then sighed and hung up. I felt bad about not answering but I don’t think he’d wanna talk to me right now.

I walked up to my room and collapsed on the bed, I really couldn’t be bothered to move. My phone vibrated next to me on the bed, I rolled over and looked at the phone, Janey had texted me.

Hey Ellie, you coming out tomorrow, Cam wants to see you again J hope you too hit it off, see you soon x

Okay so Cam was this guy we met the other day, the girls met him over summer and introduced him to me and apparently he likes me but I can’t concentrate on that at the moment, I need to concentrate on Alex and the funeral.

Hi, I can’t I have to go back to Hollywood, Alex’s dad died…and explain to Cam for me please x

Cameron was his full name, he had short brown hair and chocolate brown eyes, I must admit he was hot but I didn’t see him that way, he was just a friend. Janey answered me straightaway.

OMG NO! Aww poor Alex, I feel so sorry for him, well hope he’s okay and your okay, see you when you come back then x

I didn’t bother answering her, there was nothing left to say, she still wanted me to get with Cameron because she reckons we’re the perfect pair, I don’t think so. Plus I’ve only met him twice, I hardly know him.

My mother and Madison spent the whole night on the phone together; my mother came upstairs with the phone. I lay on the bed with the lights off and relaxed.

“Honey, do you want to talk to Alex?” I didn’t want to so I pretended to sleep, my mother believed me.

“Oh, sorry Alex but she’s fallen asleep” she said to the phone before closing the door. I soon drifted off.

I got up out of bed and got ready for the airport. My mum was already up and ready to go, an hour to early but oh well. I had a shower and got dressed, grabbed my bag and went downstairs for a quick snack before leaving. I made a sandwich and ate it in record time because my mother kept repeating, hurry up. My mother drove super speed to the airport, I swear she thought we were going to miss our flight even though we were still an hour earlier than when we were meant to be here. I was back in the airport, I was going back on a plane to see Alex but this time it wasn’t for a good reason and it wasn’t going to be joyful.

“Oo, there is an earlier flight leaving in twenty minutes, I’m going to see if we can get on it, come on honey” my mother said dragging me by my arm. There was a young man behind the counter.

“Hello, I was wondering if you could put me and my daughter on the flight to Hollywood that’s leaving in twenty minutes” she said smiling.

“I’m not sure, I’ll check now” he then started typing on the keyboard and mumbling to himself.

“Ah ha, what are the chances, there are two seats left, how would you like to pay?” he said holding out his hand. My mother handed over her credit card and impatiently tapped her foot.

Finally we had the tickets, the new ones and the old ones, we had to run to catch our plane because by the time the man had given us our tickets, we had ten minutes to catch the plane. On the plane I was stuck between my mother and some fat smelly dude, it wasn’t a pleasant ride. The man next to me fell asleep halfway through the flight and decided to lean on me! And I couldn’t shake him off, so towards the end of the flight I had a dead shoulder. When the plane landed, he finally woke up and smiled at me.

My mother rushed us to baggage claim and straight outside where she frantically searched for Madison, but I could see that Madison wasn’t picking us up because there was Alex in his mother’s car.

“Oh hi dear” my mother said sympathetically, she jumped in the front while I hopped in the back silently.

“How’s you and your mum?” she asked tilting her head to the side.

“We’re okay,” he said nodding. It was then a very quiet drive to the house. Madison was waiting in the driveway, as soon as the car stopped my mother ran out and gave her a hug. Alex and I strolled out of the car, still not speaking to each other. How had it got so awkward?

“Are you okay?” I said once we were inside. A tear ran down his face and he mumbled something, I gave him a hug to try and comfort him and then I seen Olivia. She was on the couch, wrapped up in an old woolen blanket cuddling a small teddy bear. Her eyes were bright red and she looked so sad.

“Olivia?” I whispered so quietly that she couldn’t hear me.

“Come on” Alex said pulling me by the arm up the stairs. We went into his room and he placed me on his bed.

“Look, losing my dad has shown me that it’s hard to love and lose, and Ellie I can’t lose you” he said before getting down on one knee.

“Will you marry me?” he said smiling.
