Emily's POV
"Em! Come here and help us build the sandcastle!" Ty said, pulling my arm and helping me get up from lying on the towel. I looked to the right and saw Samantha, Tyler's sister, sitting next to an almost finished sandcastle, getting a handful of sand and plopping it on the top.
"Okay let's go!" I said smiling and still hand in hand with Ty, ran to his sister and started building the castle.
After finishing our masterpiece, all of us went to clean ourselves in the water. And Ty and I being 8 years old and Sam-5, we turned it into a water fight. We splashed each other and laughed for a good 30 minutes before our parents called us to get out so that we can go to the hotel and get ready in time for the fair.
As Ty, Sam and I were best friends we wouldn't get in the cars unless we traveled together. So after convincing our parents, we piled up in their mother's car and set off. During the short ride to the hotel, we played games, sing along the songs on the radio and just joking around. When we finally arrived we jumped out of the car.
"Race you girls to the entrance!" Ty shouted and bolted to the door of the fence around the building, around the pool and headed to the door. Sam and I looked at each other, knowing that we had no chance to beat him, and smiled evilly at each other.
"Okay, here's the plan. I'll pretend to fall next to the pool and will call for him to help me, while you run to the entrance. That's the only way to beat him." I told her dead in the eye and ran after my brown haired friend. I heard footsteps after me so I didn't even need to turn around to know that the cute redhead was hot on my heels. As we entered the yard of the hotel and neared the pool, I saw Ty nearing the flight of stairs that led to our finish line.
"Aaah! Ty! Help me please!" I shouted as I dropped to the ground, face first on the ground. I lifted my head a little, just in time to see him stopping dead in his tracks and turning in my direction with a worried expression on his face. It took him a moment to realize what had happened, but after he did, he rushed to my 'rescue'. At the same time, I noticed Sam hiding behind a bush from her brother, coming to me, so that she can finish her mission.
"Oh my God! Em, are you okay?" I rolled over so that I was lying on my back and the first thing I saw was Tyler's face, hovering over mine. I could still see the worry on his face - his nose was scrunched up, eyebrows creased and head tilted to the side. I then felt really bad because it was obvious that he was really afraid that something had happened to me when in reality I just wanted to beat him in a stupid race.
"Ty I'm really sorry." I told him with watery eyes, slowly getting into a sitting position. "Sam and I just wanted to beat you so I came up with that plan. But I'm really sorry now." I finished with my head bowed, not daring to look him in the eyes and sniffling. I was very surprised when I felt a pair of arms wrap themselves around me, but hesitantly lifted my head and put it on his shoulder and hugged him back tightly. "I'm really really sorry Ty."
"Shhh... Em don't worry about it." Ty whispered and started to rub his hand up and down my back. "I'm not mad at you. Take a deep breath and calm down."
I lifted my head so that I can look him in the eyes. "You're not?" I asked in disbelief, raising my eyebrows.
"No, I'm not. Now stop crying before our parents come and ask what has happened." He said with fake seriousness and smiled at me.
"I beat you guys! I win and you lose" The sudden shout startled Ty and me and we turned to the source of the noise and saw the 5-year-old doing her happy dance in front of the hotel entrance doors. We both laughed at her craziness and I just then realized that we're still hugging.
"Umm... Sorry! Let me help you get up." Tyler said as he jumped to his feet and offered me a hand. Gladly accepting it I pulled myself up and smiled warmly at my friend, tears long forgotten.
"Okay kids! Go clean up so that we can get going!" My dad shouted as he and the other adults neared us. Sam, who was still jumping and doing silly dance moves, stopped and headed to her family's room. The rest of us followed her and went our separate ways when we had to get into our rooms.
*3 hours later*
Tyler, Samantha and I were going from stall to stall with our parents trailing after us.
"Mom! Dad! I want cotton candy! Cotton candy!" We all chorused as we saw the guy making our favorite candy in the fair. "Come on we want to get some! Hurry up!" After we decided that the adults were moving too slowly, we grabbed their hands and started dragging them to the stall.
"I want a purple one mom!" I said after carefully choosing from all the colors there were.
"I want a blue one!" Ty exclaimed when he saw his favorite color.
"Pink one for me, please." Sam said with a toothy smile so that you could see the missing front tooth.
After getting our cotton candy, we just walked around the fair, watching people play different games. Just as we finished our snacks, we stopped in front of one of these stalls, where you had to make three bottles fall, using only one ball.
"I will win the biggest prize here!" Ty stated determinately and stepped closer to the stall. It was an adorable sight - he was sure that he'll win, but his head was barely above the counter. "Mom, dad! Give me money to pay for the game, please." He said, turning to his parents with pleading eyes.
"Okay honey. Here you go." His dad said, handing him the $5 bill. Ty immediately grabbed the money and gave them to the teenage guy at the stall. In return, he was given a small ball. He backed up a bit, prepared himself and threw the ball towards the bottles. Unfortunately, he threw it weakly and it didn't even reach the balls.
"Dad, can I try once again please!" My brown haired friend pleaded, using the puppy dog eyes, that no one could resist. With a sigh, his dad gave him another bill. This time, however, the ball went above the bottles. After a few more unsuccessful attempts, Ty finally managed to knock down the three bottles.
"Yay! I finally succeeded!" He screamed triumphantly and started jumping up and down, fist pumping the air. I, myself was close to doing the same but tried to hold my excitement, but I couldn't stop the big smile, that made its way on my face.
"Congratulations Ty!" Sam and I said and took turns giving him a hug.
"Congrats kid!" the guy from the stall interrupted us. "Come and pick a prize." as he said that, he moved to the side so that Ty could choose a toy. The kid's eyes shined with excitement as he scanned all the prizes, he could choose from. And then his eyes stopped on something, but I wasn't sure what it was exactly.
"I want that one! The stuffed bear with the heart in his hands!" he pointed at the item he'd chosen and impatiently waited for the guy to give it to him.
"Here you go buddy." the teenager gave Ty his prize and smiled at him.
"Thanks." My friend then turned to me and handed me the bear. I guess from the look on my face he realized that I was wondering why he was giving me the stuffed animal. "Em, I want you to keep this bear so that it can remind you of me when I'm not around, our friendship and to show you that I'll always be by your side no matter what." By the end of his sentence, there were tears in my eyes.
"I promise to never lose it. Thank you, Ty! That means a lot to me." as I finished my sentence I hugged him so tight I may have suffocated him, but I didn't care at the moment. I just wanted him to know how much I appreciate the gesture and the fact that he'll never leave me.
