Nyla and her hair
_______________

Phoenix POV

When my sister and I entered the Banquet Hall, all eyes were upon us in an instant. My sister straightened her posture immediately which she will get a scolding for later from Mother since it was not already straight like mine. My gaze sought out every face in the room to find the ones responsible for the unnecessary tense atmosphere that happened as soon as Nyla and I stepped foot in the room. I heard my father clear his throat to get everyone's attention. I radiated calmness; you know what they say, the calm before the storm. If they are this fidgety when Nyla and I walked into the room, you know that whatever they are thinking about concerns us.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when my father, King Paladin, began speaking in a tone I didn't recognize; a stressed and pained one. "My daughters, come and sit down," my father spoke out, forcing a smile on his face. My sister and I exchanged a glance before we slowly walked to our spots giving our father a wary glance all the while. My father sat at the head of the table with my mother to his left and I to his right while Nyla was to my right. The rest of the seats were assigned to the royal guard, guards, important people, guests, and etc.

I raised my eyebrow at my father as our first course was served which happened to be our appetizer of caviar. He raises his right back at me mockingly. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at his antics to refrain from looking obnoxious when my father was finally loosing up since the war started. The war between Peacia and England has been going on for quite some time, fifty years, and both sides are still going strong. Thinking of such matters depresses me, so I turned my attention back to the food before me.

I ate my caviar quietly, wondering why the room was still tense. "I wish they would just go ahead and rip off the bandage already," I thought, scared if they found out I was the one who caused the huge fire in the kitchen last week. I was trying to learn how to bake cookies from pre-made cookie dough, but I guess I should of had someone tell me to preheat the oven. It was taking forever for the cookies to bake so I cranked up the heat of the oven all the way. Let's just say...it went out with a bang and I shot out of there as if the devil himself was after me.

When we were well into dessert at the end of the royal dinner, my father turned to me with a serious look while my mother, Queen Francesca, continued eating nonchalantly. "Is there something the matter, Father?" I inquired, knowing full well there was something wrong. My father's eyes darted back and forth between my sister and me. His eyes finally settled on me before saying, "Phoenix, England has offered to sign a peace treaty with us, but...," my father trailed off before taking a deep breath and saying the dreaded words, "The King of England wants you to marry his son, Charles Edward Steven the XXV."

My mouth gaped open until my mother spoke out, "Princesses don't have their mouths wide open like that." Then all I saw was red. My parents never made me feel loved; even though I did everything they asked of me. Now, here they were trying to send me away to marry a-a human. I could tolerate many things, but this crossed the line when they tried to make me a slave.

"You want me to marry him!" I screamed, not caring how un-ladylike I was acting. My parents sat there frozen as if not expecting my outburst of defiance.

My mother tried reason with me, "Phoenix, you need to marry him for your kingdom. You are of age. In fact, you are nineteen!"

"Never!" I declared, slamming the palms of my hands down on the banquet table before storming out of the room.

I ran through the halls, avoiding making eye contact with any of the staff. I didn't want anyone to see the tears falling. Suddenly, someone caught my arm in a strong, firm grip. The hands had rough calluses on them. I kept my head down to hide the tear stains on my cheeks. "Princess, are you okay?" I heard the sweet voice of the guard that I love saying such concerned words for me, making everything okay. I sniffled before nodding quietly; I didn't trust my mouth to not say something stupid at that moment. For example, confessing my love for him, Frederick Blair. Frederick Blair was from a long line of foxes who have the privilege of guarding the royal family.

I could picture Fred scrunching his eyebrows together before saying to me, "That is a complete lie!" I felt him put his finger under my chin and lift my head up, forcing me to look at him. "What is wrong?" He asked me in a serious tone.

I began hiccuping when I tired to speak, but managed to get out what I wanted to say, "I-I have to-to m-m-marry C-Charles." After I got it out, I broke down sobbing and ran to my private quarters. I flung myself down on my canopy bed and sobbed myself to sleep while holding my pillow as if without it I would be blown away by everything around me.
