Although it was mid May, the weather was still pretty cold. I was wearing jeans, a knitted jumper and converse, while Luke was wearing jeans, his Essendon hoodie, which he seems to wear everywhere and Nike air maxes; he looked beautiful. We decided to go for a stroll through the fields. It was a proper spring day, it wasn’t too cold or windy and the sun was bright. As we were walking, I looked up at Luke, who seemed very happy, and I couldn’t believe that he was there walking with me, holding my hand. I had to pinch myself to check I wasn’t dreaming, it all just seemed so surreal. We wandered for over an hour or more before reaching the gate back to my street.
“I want to take you out for dinner tonight,” said Luke, “you’re going to have to show me some restaurants around here so I can choose!” His thoughtfulness brought a smile to my face.
We went back home, and I loaded up a few websites on my iPad that showed lists of restaurants close to my house, and left Luke alone to choose, just as he asked. I had loved spending the day with him so far and the thought of him having to leave tomorrow dampened my mood drastically. After about 45 minutes, I heard my name being called from the top of the stairs, and when I peeped out of the living room door, Luke was standing there waiting.
“I’ve booked us a table for 7:30 tonight, don’t be late,” he said cheekily. As if I’d be late!!
“Where are we going?” I asked knowing deep down that he wouldn’t tell me, and sure enough my original instincts were right,
“You’ll have to wait and see!” Although I hated surprises, I didn’t question him because however much it was racking my brain, he was being romantic and that was something I loved about him.
I went up to get ready at 6:00, as I had to have a shower first. It took me forever to decide what to wear but after trying on almost every combination of clothes in my wardrobe, I chose to wear a cute printed dress with black tights and little ankle boots. I had my hair straight and my fringe pinned back and had on natural makeup, just a little bit of foundation, eyeliner and mascara, and a pink lip. I went downstairs at 7:00, as we had to get to the restaurant, and saw Luke standing by the front door waiting, wearing dark coloured jeans, a shirt and Nikes, looking as handsome as ever.
“Looking rather dapper,” I joked as I came down
“You don’t look too bad yourself,” he replied, winking at the end and taking my hand. My dad was acting as chauffeur for the night, but in all honesty, I was having such a good time, I didn’t care.
We pulled up outside this beautiful little Italian restaurant not too far away, and I was blown away. The décor was vintage, with the original wooden beams and brick work showing, and we were led over to a small round table for two in the corner, which was secluded from the rest of the restaurant and was lit with candles. Luke pulled out my chair like a true gentlemen and allowed me to sit down first before taking his own seat opposite me.
“Wow, this is beautiful,” I said in amazement, and he just smiled in response. We spent the entire evening chatting away and getting to know each other better. As I found out more and more about him, my love for him grew stronger. He just seemed like the perfect boy. We agreed on everything and had so much in common it was bizarre. We had such a lovely meal and I was honoured to have spent it with him, he was such an amazing friend to have, I hoped we continue to speak once he goes back on tour, it would be such a shame to lose someone like him.
Towards the end of the night while we were waiting for our desserts to come, Luke said,
“I know we haven’t known each other for that long, but we get on so well. I feel like you understand me and you aren’t like other girls, you’re special. I know we live on other sides of the world but I honestly think we can make this work. Before I go back on tour, I want to ask you something. Will you be my girlfriend?” I was shocked! Why hadn’t I said yes to moving to Melbourne the previous year!?
“Yes!” I said, I couldn’t let an opportunity like this pass. He was right. We got on so well and clearly both liked each other. Distance was something we could make work, and I was finishing school next year, we could move over there then. I told Luke of my idea about moving to Australia and he thought it was just as good of an idea as I did, and he promised that whenever he had a day off from their world tour he would fly back to London to see me. Plus, the summer holidays were coming up, and they wouldn’t be touring then, so we could spend the entire summer together. For the rest of the evening we both had a humongous smile on our faces. I felt like I had won the lottery. How could a normal girl like me end up with a beautiful guy like him? It just didn’t seem real.
We decided to walk home rather than phone my dad for a lift to give us time to talk and sort things out. When we got home, I was going to schedule in when his days off were going to be and he was going to book some flights. We were then going to tell my family about our ‘news’ and ask about spending some of the summer in Melbourne. I was going to poach the subject of moving over there a but later on, maybe in a few weeks time and when I was on my own. It was lovely to spend some time alone, just talking about how things were going to plan out and getting to know each other even better. Obviously, I was younger than Luke but it never felt noticeable, we were on each other’s level all of the time. We kissed again at the top of my road. I think he felt a bit awkward showing too much affection towards me in front of my parents, and to be honest, I felt the same, not because of the age difference but just because they were my parents and they would never let me live it down, so we decided to keep the PDAs to a minimum at home. My parents were surprisingly okay with him staying over as long as he slept in the spare room, so although nothing would have happened if we stayed together, we had to stick by the rules to build up their trust.
We sat on the sofa watching TV with the rest of my family when we got in, and at about midnight, I announced that I was going up to bed before giving Luke a hug goodnight and he kissed my forehead. I heard footsteps up the stairs not too long after I went up, and Luke came in.
“Are you still awake gorgeous?” he asked,
“Of course,” I replied. He sat on the edge of my bed, told me he was going to sleep now and gave me one final kiss goodnight.
“See you in the morning,” he said as he left the room, “don’t miss me too much!”
“Don’t worry I wont,” I joked. It was annoying that the only night we were going to have together for a few weeks had to be spent apart but we knew it was for the best.
