Forever Young

Chapter 13

Selima’s PoV

It was orderly chaos! The older and wiser women of the pack were herding us like cattle. The occasional cry from a child being carelessly knocked down, sobs from girls whose mate was out there fighting for this pack, and more was seen and heard from all angels.

My mate was out there with them, I thought to myself. Part of me, the side that will forever hold a vengeance for all he’s done to me, was glad that he was in danger. My cat certainly disagreed. She was mewling in fear for his life, although he’s an alpha. He’ll be fine…right?

Worst comes to worst, his pack members will protect him. They love him! There’s no other alternative than to keep him alive.

All the women and children were being led down to the basement. It was unused for the most part as it was set up for refuge during times of violence. You know, with stock piles of food, lots of blankets, and beds. Benches adorned area right where the staircase meets the floor.

As we entered, I noticed a little boy sobbing as he trudged with the group. His eyes were red and tears streamed down his freckled cheeks. He would look around, as if he was searching, and a forlorn look would replace the hopeful expression on his face. He must be looking for his mother or father.

“Please, everyone, stay calm!” a lady yelled above the noise. Some looked at her, some glared, but many, if not most, did as she commanded.

“Thank you, Jean.” The Luna told the woman appreciatively. “It was out of control.”

Luna Sylverstone was a beautiful woman; in both physical beauty and personality. She was always cool, calm, and collected; never showing fear, as it would worry her pack. I’ll never live up to that…

I’m not cut out for it. I’m a cat shifter; one who’s never going to mentally mature completely at that. When a cat is afraid, they hide under a bed…heck, cats run away when a doorbell merely rings... What does Kayden expect of me?

“Does he expect perfection?” I thought worriedly.

“He expects you to be there for him. He expects his mate’s love and support. He loves you, and you love him too.” My cat told me. She’s far too wise to be a kitten…

I looked up to see Luna flash me a comforting smile which I returned equally.

Walking towards me she asked, “How are your injuries?” the concern the shown on her face was comforting; no one has ever cared for me so much.

“Healing” I told her quietly. She understood that it was an extremely touchy subject for me. “May I ask you some questions?”

“Of course, dear, you’re family now.” She beamed.

“How…How are you so great at being Luna? You are perfect for the job…” She contemplated my query for a moment before answering.

“Well, it has taken years of experience to get to this point but when the mating ritual was complete, a lot came naturally. Don’t worry,” she consoled, “You’ll do just fine.” With that, she walked off.
