Chapter 4

Kayden's PoV
I looked around the family room at all the unmated girls in his pack. One of them is bound to be mine; my other half.
The family room has an open layout. There is a small dining area and a kitchen with an eating bar on one side. On the other, there's a sectional couch, a love seat, and a few single chairs to makeup the seating. Also, a fireplace as well as huge flat screen TV mounted above it. A coffee table in the middle completed this layout.
A group of girls sat talking in a window seat towards the front of the house by the front door. I recognized all of them but didn't know their names off the top of my head. I walked over to them deciding that it did not matter. I was going to be an alpha; they would understand that I'm a bit too preoccupied to learn everybody's name. Well, at least for now.
The first one to look at me was cute, but the minute I looked into her eyes, I knew that she was not my mate.
A blonde girl then looked my straight in the eyes, trying to act seductive. It utterly repulsed me. I'm looking for my mate, not some slut!
Thankfully, she was not my mate. I would have shit a brick if she had been. The third girl in this group looked to be about twenty one; a year older than me. Just to be sure I glanced into her eyes but came out with nothing.
I "talked" to about seven more girls before making my way to a few that were sitting at the bar drinking hot chocolate. Mmmm, my favorite type of drink for the cold seasons; though it's only fall. I sauntered to them and sat on the stool to their left.
"Hey ladies," I greeted. "You don't mind if I join you, do you?" I asked them.
One with long black hair looked at me and said, "No Kayden, it's cool. Join us." She knows my name? Who is she? I guess she's one of my many admirers, but...not my mate. Darn.
The same girl then got up and walked around the counter into the kitchen, saying she was grabbing me a mug. How nice of her. As she did this, I began to speak with the other girls.
I had looked in all their eyes, even touched their hands, pretending to admire rings and other pieces of jewelry, and still nothing. No spark or tingle or firework. I've been through fourteen different girls and still I end up without my mate. This is going to be harder than I thought.

I put my book down when I heard the bird chirping outside my window. I always seem to have very conflicting feelings about them.
You see, my human side loves birds and their singing. But my cat side says, "Yay, I love the taste of bird flesh!" Yeah...I think this means I should just sit here and not try to open a window, lest a song bird loses his ability to sing. How tragic?
Hmm, I wish my life were like the life of the girl in this book. She has everything. A family who loves her [and is alive], tons of friends who stand up for her, and a devilishly handsome boyfriend.
Too bad life can't be that way. Life's too much of a bitch to be like that. Well, you know what they say. "When life gives you lemons...throw those lemons through life's window and leave a flaming bag of feces on life's doorstep."
Hehe, only I say that.

Two hours later...
My head snaps up when I hear stomping and growling. Gulp. I hope that whoever it is doesn't want to take their anger out on me. Damn the Doc to hell for leaving my all needled up.
The stomps continue up and down the hall beneath my loft until I hear my doorknob turning...
Kayden's PoV
I've looked at every single unmated girl in this pack. None of them are my mate. I even called all girls, even the ones with mates, to line up so I could stare into each and every one of their eyes.
After I dismissed them, I heard whispers of them professing their pity for me; pity that I hadn't found my mate. I spent hours looking for her and nothing. I could have spent these hours that are now wasted looking for my mate at some other pack. Damn it.
I stomped up the stairs and started pacing the second floor going toward my room. On my way, I decided to continue pacing on the floor above mine. My wolf began to growl louder and louder. I'm sure I woke up any and all little kids who were sleeping on this floor.
There was one hallway in particular that I was terrorizing with stomps and growls. This hallway also happened to be the one where the stairway to the weak little cat's room is. Maybe I can have some fun tonight. It has been what, twelve hours since she was punished so she should be healed by now.
I begin to stomp to the doorway to her room when an idea pops into my head. What if we play a little game? I could take my anger out on her every time I meet a girl who's not my mate. She'll love this, I thought devilishly.
I turn the doorknob slowly, anticipation building in me and fear building in her. At least I hope that fear is building in her. Walking up the staircase, I listened to her whimpers. Yes, she does fear me! I yelled in my head.
I turned the corner to see her sinking away in to the corner of her bed. There were IVs in her small...beautiful....perfect hands. Tears streamed down her adorable face she was wincing in pain from her position.
My heart sank as soon as I met her gaze. Her beautiful golden brown eyes told me all I needed to know.
"Mine!" I hissed and lounged at her.
She sank back farther and started to cry historically.
"Look what you've done!" my wolf screamed at me in rage. I , naturally, rushed to comfort her and remedy her pain.
After many failed attempts at holding her, I settled with sitting next to her, rubbing small circles in her back. I have no idea how I will ever make up for all I've done to her; Selima...my perfect mate.

The door seems to be opening in slow motion, like in a scary movie. [I have no life] I begin to whimper from thoughts of pain that I will no doubt be experiencing very soon. I hear footsteps comeing up the stairs until he turns the corner.
Tears pour from my eyes and down my face; leaving at salty trail. Why cant he just leave me alone? I thought to myself. Why me? Why me? Why me? This repeats over and over in my head until I hear him say one, single word; a word that changes everything.
"Mine!" he hissed and lounged at me.
I sank back into the corner of my bed and cried more than I thought possible. Am I forever cursed to be abused by Kayden? Did I make a mistake in my past that has warranted this life time of pain and suffering? Why me? Why me? Why me?
He kept reaching for me but I kept working my way out of his arms. I cried for what seemed like a lifetime as her soothingly rubbed circles in my lower back. Why me?
I spent hours on this!!!!!!!!!! You better love it.
