Chapter: 16 Kennels

DARYL'S POV:

Shelby was worrying me. She ran off to find something, but she wouldn't tell us anything else about it. I sat on the ground and leaned against the metal table. I took out my knife and played with it for awhile.

Andy sat next to me and asked "do you notice a difference in Shelby as well?". I shook my head then I said "shes changing so much. Her walker side is slowly taking over. The worst part is that she doesnt ever realize it".

Andy tried to speak, but he got all choked up. Slowly he asked "what happens when her walker side takes over completely?". I trembled and got tears in my eyes just thinking about it.

I said in a shaky voice "then I'll take care of it". Andy said "I love her Daryl... I cant lose her". I laughed and said "you have no idea what love is Andy. I have been in that girls life since the moment she was born. I watched her grow up into a smart and beautiful young lady. She has to be at least 17 now. Im the one that should be a blubbering mess, not you".

Andy stood up then he walked away. He punched a wall then he yelled "WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN TO HER?". I stood up and said "either you sit down and shut up or you attract every single walker that escaped. So speak a little louder and see what happens".

I was about to punch something as well, but the door started banging and Shelby's voice came through the other side. I quickly let her in then I shut the door again.

I asked "well... Did you find what you were looking for?". She smiled and whispered "yes". Her eyes started to glow yellow so I backed away. She dropped to her knees and held her stomach in pain.

She screamed in pain so I ran over to her and held her. She pushed me away just as she threw up a dark and black liquid. She panted then said "well shit... This doesn't look good". I walked back over and helped her up. She wiped her mouth then spit.

There was nothing but silence in the room. She broke the silence saying "we need to keep moving". The way she said it killed me. There was such hopelessness in her voice.

I said "cmon guys. We need to go through one more room...then we should find the exit. We will be free soon". I took lead and walked over to the next door. I opened it then walked in.

The room was dark. Lights here and there flickered, but not enough to illuminate the entire room. I looked back and the rest of them came in. Shelby caught up to me then got in front of me. She said "Im gonna go look for a light switch. You guys stay here and look around. Use flashlights".

We all got out our flashlights and turned them on. Shelby's eyes started to glow a golden yellow then disappeared quickly to find a light switch. She didn't even have a flash light. How could she see that well?

The rest of us started to look around for anything worth taking. I examined everything carefully. All of a sudden there was a small can that rolled across the floor.

All 4 of us looked at it and gathered together in a group. We were alert now. We heard a growl so we all flashed our lights at the same spot at the same time.

There were 5 dogs standing there. They were hairless and they were... Oh fuck... They were walkers as well. They snarled at us and bloody slobber went everywhere. We all stood as still as statues. I looked around and said in a low voice "these are kennels. These are test dogs. Get ready to kill them".

I got out my gun and said "get ready to shoot. They growled then ran at us. Andy and I shot 3 immediately. Chase and Kiley were struggling to shoot them cause they were moving so fast. One leaped up and jumped on chase. It bit down on his ankle and thrashed it's head around.

Chase screamed in pain as he yelled "HELP". Kiley hit the dog with her gun and it rolled off of him. She pulled the trigger and a bullet went straight into its head.

We turned out attention again to the last dog and my heart stopped when it was standing on a table about a foot from my face. I truly thought this was the end for me. I closed my eyes and waited for it to leap at me.

Without warning Shelby came bursting through a window of glass and she tackled the dog to the ground. She eyes were bright  yellow again. She put her hands around its throat and yelled "STOP. NO MORE BITING. BAD DOG". She slapped it across the head then she let it go.

I asked "shelby what the fuck are you doing". The dog immediately growled so he looked at it and yelled "NO". Then hit it hard on the nose. The dog whimpered and backed off.

She said "adding another man to the team. If we need help we have an attack dog. She bend down and pet the dog. It licked her cheek then looked at us. She said "these are my friends. They are friendly. If you do anything to them I'll snap your neck".

The dog walked closer to us and smelled us. He went down the line and got all 4 of our scents. I asked "what the hell is he doing?". Shelby smiled and said "getting all of your scents so he knows not to attack you guys".

Chase let out a small noise so we all turned our attention to him. Shelby asked "is he bit?". Chase pulled up his pant leg and showed her the dog bite. She bent down and examined it. She looked back at the dog that was still living then she let out a small whistle. The dog came over and smelled the wound.

Shelby and the dog started in a trance at the human blood. She didn't look like herself. I snapped her out of the trance then I asked "is he infected?". She put het finger on the wound then put her finger in her mouth to taste the blood. She said "I cant taste any infection. Its clean. I think the dogs were just created as a weapon, not a carrier of the disease. I think he will be ok".

I said "we need to patch up the leg and stop the bleeding or else he wont be ok". I looked around then I reached into my backpack. I pulled out a med kit and opened it. I pulled out a disinfectant and a wrap around bandage. I looked at Chase and said "this is going to hurt...a lot".
