Ch:9 Play Dumb

SHELBY'S POV:

We ran as fast as we could towards Ruby's lab. I grabbed the key card and swiped it across the scanner as Andy punched in the code. The unlocked then we bolted in.

We shut the door then ran up the steps. I opened the door and walked over to another door. I opened it and saw Ruby sleeping in a small bed. There was barely anything in there. Just her bed, a trunk, and a small nightstand. Thats all that she could fit in there.

I walked over to her bed and shook her. She shot up in bed then looked at me. She said "jesus christ Shelby. You almost gave me a heart attack". I said in a worried tone "Ruby you gotta come check this out immediately". She could see the worry on my face.

She got out of bed and followed me. As Andy put the tape in her VCR I asked "do you ever recall a test subject named Duncan?". She nodded in sadness then she said "he was one of my closest friends. He was a young scientist here. Well more like my intern. Johnson said he found him one day in the infected lab. He committed suicide by feeding himself to walkers".

A tear rolled down her cheek. I wiped it away then I said "Johnson lied to you. Heres what really happened. Theres also many more tapes so this isn't the only time he's done this".

Andy pressed the play button. We stood back and let Ruby watch it all. She was crying her eyes out by the end of the video. She said "I want to see the other tapes". Andy took out the tape then said "we would need to break back into the lab then".

Ruby looked back and asked "which lab did you guys break into?". I said "the infected lab. We had to put on haz mat suits and everything". Ruby sighed then she said "Johnson is head of the infected lab".

Out of nowhere Johnson walked through the door asking "what am I head of?". We all turned around immediately. Andy hit the tape behind him by tucking it in his pants then covering the other half by putting his shirt over it.

Ruby giggled then she said "oh I was just explaining who worked where here. He nodded then he said "oh ok. Well if you want I could take them on a tour of my lab".

She said "thats completely up to them". He looked at us waiting for an answer. I looked at Andy and he nodded. I looked back at Johnson then I said "ok we will come with you".

As Johnson turned around Andy snuck the tape to Ruby so he wouldn't get caught with it in Johnson's lab. We followed Johnson and pretended to have no clue where it was. I even turned the wrong way to try to trick him.

He laughed then said "this way silly". I laughed back and said "geez Im dumb. This lab is just too big. I have no idea where Im going". He said "oh don't worry. I'll make sure you don't get lost. I'll also make sure you get back to Ruby's lab".

I smiled and said "thank you". He nodded and kept walking. Andy tried to play dumb as well and asked "so what do you do in the infected lab?". Andy and I clearly knew what he was up to so whatever would come out of his mouth would be a lie.

Johnson said "well I test walkers we capture. We are trying to find a cure and since we found you we are very close to finding one. We will probably be conducting another blood test on you in a few days. I will do it in here. We may even record it on tape to have a document of history in the making".

As soon as he said that me and Andy looked at each other. I said "thanks for the offer, but I will get Ruby to take it since she is the scientist working with me. Also because I stay in her lab with her".

Johnson had a look on his face. He said "oh I see. Well if you change your mind please let me know". I nodded then we walked into the infected lab. We all stopped and put on haz mat suits. Then we got sprayed then entered the actual part of the lab.

An eerie feeling sunk into my gut as we looked around the room we were in not even an hour ago. Johnson walked over to the other door we were going to explore. He smiled and said "right this way".

Johnson entered first then I went second. Andy grabbed my hand and followed close behind me. It was pitch dark but I could hear the sounds of walkers all over the place.

All of a sudden the lights flickered on and my jaw dropped. There were at least 50 glass cages like the one I was in. They were filled with all different kinds of walkers.

Out of nowhere a walker ran up to us. I pushed Andy out of the way and let the walker bite down on my arm. Right after it bit my arm I yelled "STOP". The most strangest thing happened. The walker let go of my arm and stared at me.

Andy spoke causing the walker to go after him. I yelled at the walker again and amazingly it stopped and left Andy alone. It sniffed him and nipped at him, but never got close enough to bite him.

Johnson peered out from a corner smiling. He said "absolutely remarkable. I think we are going to be good friends". He bumped into something causing the walker to freak out.

I quickly pulled out my knife and threw it at the walker and got it in the head just before it could bite Andy. Andy looked at me then said "thanks babe". I nodded then looked back at Johnson.

I said to him "are you out of your fucking mind? What if Andy would have gotten bit? Don't you ever fucking do that again or I will rip your flesh from your body and feed it to these walkers. I don't think thats what you want".

He smiled and said "I love your sassiness. I do want to show you something though. Come this way".
