Take It Back

I woke to the sound of clattering which I figured was from the kitchen. My first instinct was to reach for the man who was holding me when I went to sleep last night. The bed was empty so I opened my eyes and scanned my room. No Damon.
I decided to wake Jeremy, but when I went to knock on his door I found he was already awake. Maybe it was later than I thought.
"Morning." I greeted with a smile.
"Morning." He seemed confused at my unusual happiness. Today it felt like the world would be finally be okay and everything could be peaceful for once.
"Have you seen Damon?" I asked as I was about to leave.
"No, why would he be here?" He asked with an accusing look.
"Um, no reason." When he rolled his eyes I decided I should tell him the truth "Jer to be honest I made him sleep here because I'm afraid of what I might do if he isn't here to stop me. Now that I'm a vampire I can't control myself. It makes me feel safer to have him around."
Jeremy listened to my speech and seemed to consider it for a minute then nodded.
"Okay, but leave the door open from now on so I can make sure no funny business goes on in there." We both laughed because we knew it was something mom and dad used to say.
"You got it" I walked away with a big smile plastered on my face.
I got ready in record time and was out of my house and on my way to Damon's house. I went inside quickly to see blue eyed vampire leaning over the fire place, deep in thought. I cleared my throat and he slowly turned my way. Damon was holding a glass of what looked like bourbon and he was wearing an expression of pain and guilt.
"Damon what's wrong?" Concern swept over me and I rushed over to him.
"Elena... I think you and I need some time apart." The expression on his face broke my heart in more ways than you can count.
"Why?" I blurted it out in exasperation.
"Stefan needs to have a chance to be with you. I don't think it's fair to monopolize you like that." I could tell he was doing this out the goodness of his heart which made this whole situation even more terrible.
"Damon, it isn't Stefan's fault or yours. He and I... we've drifted apart and I don't feel the same about him anymore."
"You could though if I left you." Tears began to form in my eyes. He was looking at the floor so I put a finger under his chin and made him look me in the eyes.
"I need you, Damon Salvatore. You're all I have. You can't leave me, not now or ever." He didn't speak and I could tell he was fighting his feelings.

I new right then that I was irrevocably in love with Damon Salvatore. I loved every last detail about him. His faults just made me love him even more. He stood there, willing to let go of everything he loved just for Stefan and I to have a chance together. But the truth is I could never really be happy without Damon. The cocky blue eyed vampire had stolen my heart and I was never going to get it back.

I knew that if I told him right then he would just think I was lying to get him to stay so I didn't say anything else. Instead I wrapped him in my embrace as he went rigid beneath my touch.

"Damon, don't leave me please." I whispered into his chest.
"Elena..."
"I can't do this without you."
"You're good at controlling your hunger now, you can do this."
"Thats not what I was talking about." I stood back so I could see his face.
"What were you talking about then?"
"I can't live without you. I was able to live without Stefan, but I won't be able to take it if you leave me." He sighed and I felt as if I was finally winning this war. He kissed the top of my head softly.
"I've got to go." He whispered and I could tell it was taking his whole being to not give up.
"NO! Everyone else has left me! You don't get to say goodbye!" I was now angry and I pushed away from him.
"It's the right thing to do though." I couldn't tell if he was trying to reason with me or himself. I walked out away from him and towards the door.
"If you're not here when I get back tonight than I will find you and bring you back myself." With that I slammed the door behind me.
