Chapter 13

Jane walks into the apartment. Tate is trying to talk to her but she tells him that she is tired, ignores everyone else and goes straight to her bed.

She finds a note from Jax with a bag on her bed.

The note says, “Now you have some shoes.  –Jax”

In a local department store bag she finds a pair of juvenile looking flip-flops slightly smaller than her size. She is touched by Jax’s thoughtfulness and it makes her weepy all over again. What is wrong with her? When she arrived she couldn’t keep from fainting and now she has become a big whiney baby.

Jane tosses and turns for hours unable to find sleep. She keeps thinking about the events of the past week, especially this evening at Tate’s parents’ house.

She is still upset about the way Tate seemed to be trying to overwhelm her on purpose. Was all of his kindness an act or was his hostility an act or perhaps a wall to keep her out?

And why did these guys have to be such health freaks with their stupid juice drinking? Would it kill them to have some chocolate in their apartment? Oh my gosh! She knew this feeling. This was PMS!

Wow! Her memory was working. Jane realizes that it has been working for some time. Little by little she has been remembering things like all those memorized recipes she used to fix meals for the guys. Plus, she has always been clear on her likes and dislikes.

This was a total light bulb moment. If she was a cartoon, there would be a glowing light bulb above her head. Duh! Why hadn’t she seen it before? Maybe if she concentrated hard enough, she could remember her name. Then she won’t have to be plain old Jane any more.

Wait! Jane, Jane Peters. That’s her name: Jane Peters! Whoa! That’s crazy; she totally is Jane.

It isn’t long before she remembers her life and quickly following that memory is a growing fear in the pit of her stomach. She needs to get out of here fast. Her old life and new life can never cross. With those grim thoughts in her mind, Jane finally succumbs to sleep.

She oversleeps the next morning due to her late night of thinking and remembering. She wakes with the feelings of dread and urgency enrobing her. She knows what she has to do. She climbs from her bed, straightens her spine and purposefully sets out with determination to do what she has to do.

She finds that the guys are already gone and she has the apartment to herself once more. She does her daily routine being sure to do a thorough cleaning.

As she is cleaning Tate’s room, she notices that he has money lying on his dresser. This is nothing new, but her desire to take the money is. After wrestling with her conscience, Jane decides to “borrow” the money. She can let Tate know and pay him back later. The first part of her plan is complete.

She sits down to write the guys a letter about her returned memory, explaining who she is, where she lives and goes to college. She promises to repay the money she “borrowed.” She also tells them about the extra meals she has been stockpiling in the freezer. Another step in her path away from her roommates is complete.

Jane finds a taxi listing in the phone book and calls them, grabs a grocery bag holding her few things, and forces her feet into the snug flip-flops. Watching from the window, she sees the Taxi cab pull up to the curb. With one last look around the apartment, she leaves, pulling the locked door shut behind her. Thus ending the chapter of her life that including four kind men and a week of their hospitality. It is time for her to step back into reality.

Jane takes the cab to the bus station to buy passage home. She doesn’t notice Simon secretly following the taxi in his rusty sedan.
