"Sir, I have an update for you if you'd like it." A small woman, maybe in her 50's, stood in front of me. Her hands were folded, that was never a good sign.

"Is she okay? Just tell me she's okay." I pleaded.

Everything had all happened so fast, one second I was asking her to marry me and the next she was on the ground barely breathing.

"She's going to be fine. We're running a few more labs as we speak. Would you like to see her?"

Without a word I was following this small nurse through closed doors until I saw her.
I had never seen her look so small, so fragile, so hurt. The woman who had always been so strong, was now so vulnerable.

"Selena."

"Justin." She gave a small smile. "I'm so sorry."

"Do not apologize, the timing wasn't your fault." I grinned.

"I will."

"You will what?"

"Marry you dummy. I will marry you."

"Let's not worry about that right now. My main priority is making sure you're okay."

"Justin. I'm going to marry you and that will be the end of that."

"Ms. Ramos." A man appeared in the door way. "I'm Dr. Avila, I'll be the head of your case. So far your blood work has come back okay, we're just waiting on a few scans to come back as well. Can you tell me what happened."

"Well, we were on the river walk. My boyfriend was proposing, before I could even answer I was on the floor." Selena was as calm as ever. I don't know how she did it.

"Have you been having any trouble recently? Maybe the past few weeks?"

"I've been okay, nothing really stands out." She shrugged.

"She's been losing weight like crazy." I butt in. "I don't know if that'll make a difference sir, but I spend every moment I can with this girl, that's the only change I've seen."

"That does make a difference, thank you." He began writing notes. "I'm going to go order another CT, I'll be back in a moment."

"Jc I'm scared." Selena finally let herself be weak.

"I'm not leaving you." I placed my hand on hers. "In sickness and in health, til death do us part."

"You are something else Mr. Castillo."

"Well, future Mrs. Castillo, I try to be."

*****************************************

A long wait, several tests, and 6 cups of coffee later, Dr. Avila finally made a reappearance.

"Ms. Ramos, I don't know an easy way to say this." He let out a sigh.

"Is it bad? Am I going to die?" Sel immediately freaked out.

"Ms. Ramos, you are fine. Everything came back clear. Unfortunately I have to release you and send you on your way. Which means I'll be sending you with your fiancé and lord knows what this boy did to torture you to faint." He laughed. "You were dehydrated. Your body shut down to save you. My suggestion is you get some water into your system and take it easy the rest of the day."

"You're serious? That's it?" She laughed. "Damn Justin see what you did?"

"Hey now, I did nothing wrong." I laughed.

"You can get dressed, I've got your discharge papers all ready to go. Justin if you'll come with me to sign them please." Without missing a beat he turned on his heels and walked out.

"I'll be right back." I said to Sel before following the doctor.

"I'll need you to sign this one, and the following two." Dr. Avila handed me a clipboard. "She's gorgeous, and strong. You have yourself a good one."

"I like to think so." I grinned. "She was really just dehydrated?"

"It happens to the best of them."

"I thought I could lose her, that's one of the scariest things we've dealt with."

"So you were on the river?"

"I took her to marriage island. We won't get married there like I would like to, so I at least wanted to propose there."

"Why won't you get married there? Cost too much?"

"No sir, I could afford it just fine. We live in Los Angeles, we're just visiting home. I thought I'd bring her to really meet my mom before I asked, but that didn't go so well and I don't think we'll be back."

"So mom doesn't approve?"

"We've had a lot of ups and downs over the course of our relationship. My mom knows only the bad, and that's my fault, but she won't even give her a chance."

"And you're sure picking the girl over your mother is the right decision?"

"With no disrespect, I'm positive. This girl is everything to me. My mom loves me, and she'll get over it. But Selena, she loves me too, she's been nothing but good for me."

"You know, I felt the same thing about my wife. I was head over heels for her in high school, my parents hated her, but I married her anyway. 3 kids later, I know why. You find the right one and you stick with them kid. My wife is the best mother, and she supports me. We're happy even after 16 years."

"And your parents?"

"They never came around. To this day I still get invited to things with the memo 'To Chris and the kids'. We don't talk too much, or go around as often as we should. My wife tries to get me to go, to take the kids, but I hate going without her. She's my wife for crying out loud and after 16 years they should see that she's not going anywhere."

"But you two have stuck by each other all this time even when your parents don't support it?"

"My parents are my parents, and as bad as it sounds, they won't be around forever. My wife on the other hand, we made a vow, she's my forever."

"I needed that Dr. Avila. Thank you." I couldn't help but smile. Even without my moms approval, Selena is my forever.

"You two be safe." And just like that, he was gone again.

"Can we go get food? I'm starving." Selena's voice popped up behind me.

"You're always hungry." I laughed.
This was my person.
