October 2010
A month went by...October was in affect and Halloween was comingDelilah was locked in her office catching up on emails and paperwork. She walked out to the floor to check on the girls when a delivery man walked through the door. "Flowers for Lila Bryan?"
"That's me." She signed for the pink roses and took the card. "Sweet Delilah, you can run but you can't hide. Be seein you soon."
Her blood ran cold and the hair on the back of her neck stood straight up.
"Lils?" Hannah watched the blood drain out of her face. "Are you ok?"
"I uh, I have to go.... Can you close the store?" She backed towards the office.
"Yea sure, but are you sure you're ok?"
"Yea. I...I just need to go."
Her heart was racing as she grabbed her purse and keys. She shoved her phone and the card into the bag. She didn't look at the girls as she rushed from the store. Her hands were shaking as she unlocked the door to her Jeep. She glanced around and hit Luke's name on the hands free. It went to voicemail. "It's Luke, you know what to do."
"Luke, he knows where I work.... call me back."
Tears were pooling as she turned the Jeep towards Cole's house.
Cole had just opened a beer when there was a knock on the door. He set the beer down and went to see who was outside his house at nearly six pm.
Delilah kept looking over her shoulder as she waited for Cole to answer the door.
A few seconds later the door open and Cole filled the doorway. Before she could stop herself she was flinging herself into his arms.
The momentum of Delilah's body nearly threw him off balance. His arms circled her waist as he righted them. "Lila? Hey, what's wrong?" Her tears were hitting his chest and she was shaking like a leaf.
"He found me... he knows I'm here." She sobbed.
"What? Who? Baby, you gotta stop cryin so I can understand you." He stepped back into the house pulling her with him. He shut the door and led her to the kitchen. She was clinging to him like her life depended on it.
"Slow down and tell me what's wrong? What's got you so scared? You're shaking." Cole lifted her chin and saw the fear in her eyes.
"Ryan...He knows where I work."
Cole felt his heart stop. "What? What are you talkin about? He's married...."
"No." She shook her head. "He sent me flowers. There was a card...."
"When?"
"Today. This evenin. A dozen pink roses." She shivered. Cole closed his eyes. Only he and a few others knew why Delilah hated roses. Ryan send her a dozen pink roses after they fought. When they broke up and he was stalking her he would send them to her to let her know he was watching her.
He opened his eyes and pulled her close. "Where's the card?"
"In my purse." She pulled the card from the bag and handed it to him.
Cole felt the anger rise in him as he read the words. "Son of a bitch." He growled and slammed the card down onto the counter causing her to jump.
He softened his tone and pulled her close. "Did you call Luke?"
"Yes but it went to voicemail.... I'm scared, Cole. He's pissed...."
"He's not gonna get anywhere near you. I promise." He kissed her temple. "I'm gonna try to reach Luke...." He released her and grabbed his phone.
