CHAPTER NINE

It was a few days later, we had started travelling again. We stayed in the area; not too close, not too far away. Cain tried to come up with plans to defy his father, or to somehow get away. But I knew what my choice was going to be. I wouldn't betray him. I wouldn't do anything to defy him. I knew that I had to stick with him this time, no matter what happens.

We wanted to make what days we had left of real freedom. Or at least I did. Cain could always be free as he wished, he had no other family; other than Rosa. But she was a great asset to Amare. Sure, I would have freedom when I was attached to my job. I could do hits all around the world, but it was the very thought of being part of something bigger. Something that was watching practically your every move. They knew of  your actions, of which you do and your plans.

The days flew by faster than I wanted them to. I loosened up and decided to have real fun and be relaxed. After all, those were my real last days that I would be able to not keep looking over my shoulder.

It was one morning during my last week of freedom that flowers were at the end of my bed when I awoke. I was smiling widely and I picked up the bouquet of deep red and purple roses, smelling them. My heart fluttered as I opened up the note attached to them.

My beautiful Desdemona,
I've went out to get some food. I'll be back soon.
-Cain
PS. I made you smile, didn't I

I sighed, heavily. This is what I asked for when I agreed to this bet. I wasn't supposed to be letting my emotions control me, but Cain was channeling them. I was allowed to be angry or annoyed, not love struck or the like. I wasn't allowed to love. It only caused trouble.

Sadly, his plan was working. I did like him more than I should but it wasn't like I was going to tell him or do anything about it. It seemed like he loved me, but I would have to fix his feelings eventually. And he would have to get over me.

Cain walked in the door a couple hours later to find me rereading a book that I had bought just the week before. He placed two bags on the kitchen table beside me.

"Did you like my gift?" he questioned as he plopped down beside me. I looked over at him.

I put down the book and smiled slightly at him, "Yeah, they were nice. I'm glad your friendliness hasn't disappeared over the years."

I knew he was going to protest, "It wasn't out of frie--"

            "So are you hungry?"

"Kind of, I guess." he responded, with a somber look on his face. I felt bad for doing this to him, but he was right, he shouldn't love me.

"I'll make something then," I smiled, politely, standing up.

"No, it's alright," he walked towards me and reached behind me. My breath hitched and he smirked as he noticed. He pulled away, holding a box of cereal and walked over to the counter to make himself a bowl of cereal.

I sat back down, defeated. No matter how I tried, hiding my feelings didn't work.

            "Hey, Des?"

"Yes, Cain?" I said, trying to sound normal.

"I think I'm winning the bet,"
