CHAPTER TEN

"Are you sure you want to make this decision, Des?" Cain whispered to me as we walked towards the doors of the safe house.

"I'm sure. What else can I do, Cain? Tell me," I turned towards him, begging he had a brilliant idea that could solve this whole mess. I didn't want to put Kerri in danger or anyone else, but I also didn't want to go through with my plan. It would save everyone the trouble.

He shook his head. I knew it was too good to be true. I was stuck with my old life again that would change again soon, and I knew I would just have to learn to love it.

I walked in the building that would control practically the rest of my life.

KERRI

Cain had told me Des had to do this for me, but I was so angry that she wouldn't tell me herself. Or that she wouldn't come to see me at all before she joined again.

"What are you going to do?"

"Hunt that sick man down and destroy that stupid business even if it gets me killed!" I screamed in anger. Hunter grabbed my arms tried to calm me as I began to cry.

"She'd be doing this for nothing then, Kerri. You know that she didn't want to join and that she's doing this for you. Don't let her sacrifice go to waste. I don't want to lose you," Hunter replied and pulled me into a hug. It calmed me quite a lot, he smelled like home and made me feel so safe.

"This would get her out of this though!" I protested, but a lot less angry.

"But if you get killed, she would blame herself and she won't have any family left. You mean so much to her, baby. Just stay safe here with me, okay?"

"What if she gets killed because of this sacrifice though?"

We sat down on the couch and Hunter wiped away my tears, "She knows what she's doing, Ker, don't worry. Plus she has Cain and probably many others who have her back."

"Fine, but if anything happens to her, I'm not going to sit around and do nothing. Either you will be with me or against me. Your choice."

"I'm with you, Kerri. I always will be no matter what. I love you, baby girl," Hunter kissed me lightly.

            "I love you, too."

DESDEMONA

We were travelling to France for the important hit. Apparently this man was threatening the guy who hired us. His company, him and his family were at risk; our hit was going to try to kill them and take over the business. It was our job to neutralize the target before any of this could happen. It was an urgent matter and we were being paid top dollar to finish this quickly.

It was team Alpha. But since I was part of the team last, it had changed. It was Kyla, John, Cain and me. Kyla and John were experienced killers; some of the best. I was the third best in the industry. Amare, John and then me. Or I used to be. I was a sick monster back then. Something that I had to be transformed back into.

Before we left, I had some training to get to know the ropes again. I was stocked with ammunition and back up weapons like knives and serums that were could be injected into the skin or placed in food to look like an allergic reaction. It targeted the lungs, while our other serum created blood clots near the heart.

Our plane ride to France was high class. We were taking a regular commercial flight and I seemed to be the only one who understood French. One of the attendants only spoke French and German. Both languages that the others were weak in. We were all required to learn certain languages. Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Serbian were the mandatory ones. I took the extra time to study French and German to a fluency level for my amusement.

This was my type of mission, seeing it was in the heart of France. It was probably one of the reasons I was assigned.

We went to the nearest hotel to go over our plan.

Cain patted the chair beside him but I sat across the room. Ignoring his visibly upset expression, I crossed my legs and looked at John. The assigned leader in this mission.

"Okay, so we have to remember that this person can already have an attack team going on Mr. Duvelle. So we have to take precautions and assign two of us to look after Duvelle. The other two can take Gaudet out," John explained and we nodded. "Cain and Des; both of you are going to be protecting Duvelle while Kyla and I take out Gaudet," John continued and I flicked my eyes over at Cain quickly to read his expression. It was clear of any indication that he was happy or mad we were together for this mission.

Just before I was about to turn away, he caught my eye and smiled broadly at me. I looked away quickly, a smile threatening to pull onto my face.

I glanced back at John to notice that he saw our exchange. He gave me an understanding look that left me knowing that my plan would definitely be the right thing to do.

***

It seemed like Mr. Duvelle was actually having a new year's eve party at a hotel across town from where our own hotel was. Not only did Cain and I have to dress up in fancy apparel; we had to convince the security  that we were invited. That included Cain's horrible French skills since apparently he had a plan.

"Oh stop, just tell me what you want to say and I'll repeat it to them," I finally said and looked at the security telling them to excuse my partner's language skills.

"Tell them that Mr. Duvelle is expecting us. If they were to tell him that we were here then they would let us through," Cain whispered in my ear.

I told that to the security but they shook their heads.

"Non, nous ne pouvons pas demander Monsieur Duvelle, Madamoiselle," the first one said

I was cursing in my head. Cain's plan sucked. Suddenly something came to mind. I explained something to the security guards.

Their eyes went wide. They nodded instantly and opened the door for our entrance. They were foolish, even though I was telling the truth. But there was still the possibility of us being the ones to kill him.

"What did you say to them?" Cain asked once we were inside.

"I told them we were the protectors of Mr. Duvelle," I explained and weaved my way in the crowd to the other side of the room.

I climbed the stairs with Cain, cursing my choice of dress. It was pretty but too revealing; it was creeping me out from all the stares I was receiving. We turned the corner and headed towards where I thought Duvelle might be. We checked the area of anyone who looked suspicious. When we reached the end of the hall Cain stopped in mid-step.

He pointed out Duvelle as soon as we came in sight of his back. We froze though as soon as we noticed who was beside him.

            Gaudet.

With a gun up against his back. He was threatening Duvelle.

I now knew why the security let us in so easily when I told him we were the protectors of Mr. Duvelle, as we suddenly were surrounded by men in tuxes with guns.
