CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Desdemona decided to wait in the rented car as Maria knocked on the door of Cain and Rosa's little townhouse. Cain opened the door after looking through the peep hole.
"Maria? What are you doing here? Are you going to stab me with one of your serums again?" Cain scowled, giving Maria a weird look.
"No, no. I have brought my friend though. May we come in? She's in the car," Maria replied, politely. "And I'm really sorry for stabbing you," she gave a small chuckle.
"Yes, of course. Come in," Cain replied, noticing a form in the car. He hoped that Maria's friend could supply him information of anything. Anything that had happened with his father.
Maria waved at the car and Desdemona came out in a trench coat, beret and sunglasses. She walked up the pathway, she felt like her heart was going a million miles a minute and the butterflies in her stomach were overwhelming.
When Des reached Cain, she looked up, and couldn't help but smile.
"Come in," Cain prompted them to follow him. He didn't realize it was his love standing at his doorway. Maria and Des followed him into the living room. Rosa was upstairs in her room, sleeping. "Sit down, would you two like anything to drink or eat?"
"No, thank you," Maria replied.
"Water would be nice," Desdemona said and Cain froze instantly. He recognized her voice but he knew it couldn't be her. "Anything wrong?" she asked, trying not to laugh.
"I'm sorry, you just sound like...someone I used to know."
"Oh, what happened to her?"
"She died," Cain answered somberly and quickly fetched a glass of water from the kitchen.
"Go, Des!" Maria hissed.
Des jumped up and walked into the kitchen, "Cain..." she pulled off her beret and sunglasses, setting them aside.
Cain dropped the glass of water, his eyes wide and his mouth open, "Desdemona...?"
Des did not reply, she stepped over the spilled water and over to Cain, kissing him fiercely. Cain didn't need any encouragement, he pulled her close, tears in his eyes.
Des clutched him so tight, and never wanted to let go. When they pulled apart, tears began to run down her cheeks.
"I'm so sorry, Cain. I had to do it. I had to do it to keep you safe. I didn't want to put you in any danger! Please, I don't know how you can ever forgive me but I would be forever grateful if you did. You mean the world to me!"
Cain wiped away her tears with his thumbs. "My Desdemona, my love, I could never not forgive you. I love you so much," he pulled her in his arms and held her tight.
"I love you so much, too, Cain. I've missed you, from the second I left you. I'm so sorry,"
Desdemona felt so guilty, but she knew he wasn't going to hold anything against her as long as he had her and as long as she didn't leave him again like that.
Cain thought he was dreaming. His Desdemona was in his arms again and he thanked the Lord. He shushed her, kissing her again. He had missed her so much it was insane. Cain never wanted to let her go.
"Des! Oh my God, is that you?! Des!" Rosa ran to Desdemona and tackled her practically to the ground. "How is this possible, I was sure you were dead! Explain now!"
"I promise, I'll explain everything...just not right now. I have some bad news but in a way it is good," Des said, wiping away the rest of her tears. Cain clutched onto her hand and she equally held his. "Let's sit."
Maria was still sitting there, smiling like crazy. She was happy that Des had a bright look to her face again. They had become really close over the past few months, enough that when Des was sad, she was sad as well. They shared stories of their pasts and their feelings, interests and problems.
Desdemona took her time explaining what had happened with Amare and then gave them their letters. Rosa and Cain read them both within a few minutes and they both were so surprised but touched that the great emotionless Amare felt for them.
That night, Desdemona and Maria stayed over. Desdemona slept in Cain's bed with him, as they couldn't leave each other for more than ten minutes without worrying. Maria had the spare room.
"So, you got my father to make it look like you were killed?" Cain questioned her and Des nodded, sadly. He stared at her nonstop, still not believing his eyes. Cain was still amazed that his Des was back with him.
Desdemona was in paradise. She was with the man she loved and she had no worries anymore, she could finally live in peace and feel what she wanted, "Cain, I love you."
Cain smiled brighter than the sun, "I love you, too, my Desdemona."
