Chapter 5

(Something's missing)

IT was mid afternoon as Lucas stood at the window looking down at Tori and Athena playing in the courtyard below. Lucas had called Warner and arranged for Athena to be brought. Lucas frowned as he thought over the councils orders.

“There has to be a loop hole,” Lucas said.

“I don’t know Lucas. They worded it well,” Ryker replied from where he sat in a chair in the High Prince’s office. “She isn’t to leave Moon Shadow for any reason before the wedding.”

“No one expected anything like this!” Lucas said turning to face his enforcer. “None of us foresaw River would die and end their marriage. This isn’t fair to her. It isn’t fair to River or his family. Tori should be allowed to attend the funeral of her dead husband!” He said angrily.

Ryker only nodded in agreement. He felt sorry for his charge. Lucas hadn’t known River hadn’t even been buried until they had arrived in Germany. The moment he’d found out he’d immediately began making phone calls to every council member to gain permission for him to take Tori back to America for River’s funeral. It made him proud he’d chosen to protect him so long ago.

The High Prince was completely ignoring anything he had gained by the tragedy. Lucas’ attention was focused on doing what he could for both Tori and the Mark’s family. He had never hated River and wanted the dead man’s memory honored. He’d even been the first to request Athena’s presence; knowing full well it was River that had given her the honoree Malamute.

Hearing the phone on his desk Lucas quickly picked the phone up and brought it to his ear. Very calmly he said, “Hello.”

“Prince Lucas.”

“Miguel,” The blonde man said instantly recognizing the Spanish man’s voice. “I hope you are calling me with good news.”

“It is very reluctantly but yes,” Prince Miguel replied. “Even Bakari found your arguments to be far more valid than he’d like. He was never fond of the Mark’s boy.”

“Thank you Miguel,” The High Prince replied. “I appreciate you helping me with this matter.”

“Yes well, you don’t leave her side,” The Spanish prince replied.

“I under…”

“No you don’t,” Prince Miguel interrupted. “A suite at Embassy Suites has been secured for you. Tori and you are to share the suite.”

“I hardly think that is appropriate we are not even married yet,” Lucas objected. He noticed his enforcer’s eyebrow rise up in curiosity.

“The suite has two bedrooms,” Miguel assured him. “You will each have your own room.”

“Very well,” The High Prince reluctantly agreed.

“She is never to be more than fifteen feet from you,” Miguel informed him. “You must be with her even at the funeral.”

“I had already planned to be at her side,” Lucas replied. The prince hadn’t intended to be right next to her the entire time but if that was what it took so be it.

“Good. You are allotted three days Lucas. The day before, the day of the funeral, and the day after. No more time will be given.”

“I un...”

“If you try to leave early with her we will have no choice but to demand you both be married at once and will refuse you any travel until she is with child.”
