Dinner at Zach's house went well; his little sister seemed to love me right away which was a surprise because I've never been around younger kids really. Zach is very like both his dads it's easy to see how much they both love him and are encouraging him to do what he wants to do. I learnt that even though he loves to cook and work on cars with each of his parents he really wants to be a carpenter.
"Tom are you listening?" Mum asks bring me out of my day dreaming.
I look around the dinner table realising I have no idea what's going on.
"No, sorry mum," I say wondering why we even had to have this family dinner on a Monday evening, I'm knackered.
"Bobby just told us you went to his boss's house for dinner..." Mum says trailing off.
"Saying it like that is weird mum, I went to a mates house that's all," I say rolling my eyes because I know my mother and I know where this is going.
"Well they are new to the area, maybe we should invite your friend and his parents over for dinner?" she says smiling.
Bobby looks like he is freaking out a bit and it's weird because I thought that would be me, maybe I'm too tired to care.
"I doubt they'd want to mum, they have lives," I say shoving food into my mouth in hope she stops questioning me, but I'm just not that lucky.
"Did you meet his mum? What does she do?" Mum continues and I roll my eyes again.
"He doesn't have a mother mum," I say glaring at Bobby, I mean jeez who really cares if mum and dad hate his boss because he's gay, I'm the one that should be freaking out here not him.
"I'm sorry, he doesn't have a mum? That poor boy," Mum says horrified.
"No mum, he has two dads," I say and look down at my plate of food suddenly feeling sick.
"Your boss is gay?" mum asks Bobby.
"Yes, is that a problem?" Bobby asks mum.
"No," mum and dad say together but I'm not relieved like I thought I would be.
"Really?" Bobby asks unsure.
"Absolutely one of the guys at work is gay," dad says conversationally.
"My hair dresser Zoe has a girlfriend," mum tells us.
"So do you want to invite them around for dinner or should I?" Mum says getting back on topic.
"No, they aren't coming over for dinner mum stop being weird." I tell her finishing my dinner and leaving the table.
