Her blue hair was always the first thing Gray noticed when she wasn't smiling. It stood out against the bleach white sheets and blankets. It was the only colored thing in the room, making it hard for Gray to take his eyes away from her sleeping body.
He took a seat beside her bed, sitting in his early position with his elbows on his knees holding his chin.
The two sat in silence for a while as Gray took in all the machines hooked to Juvia. He listened to the beeps that sounded from the heart monitor. The small sounds gave him hope, and they told him that she was still alive. She wasn't going anywhere. Yet.
Tubes curled down Juvia's throat and all around her body. An IV tube sat in her left arm while others curled in places Gray couldn't even see. She looked almost as pristine as the rest of the room which made the black haired male feel sick inside. Her skin was so pale, and her breathing was weak.
The male reached for her hand and attempted to take a deep breath but was only met with a shaky gasp. He wrapped his tanned fingers around her cold, pale ones and brought her hand to his mouth. He gently kissed the skin and breathed on her hand, hoping to somehow warm her skin. But he knew it would do nothing.
Silently, tears fell from his eyes and onto Juvia's hand.
"H-Hi," Gray felt himself croak out. Small sobs quickly followed, but Gray wasn't done. One word would not suffice.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Juvia. I can't lose you. I know it's stupid, Juvia. I know I'm being dumb," Gray sobbed, hiding his eyes in Juvia's hand. "But I can't lose you. You became my world, Juvia. You became the one I could always count on. You are everything to me."
Gray let himself cry for a moment. He couldn't have gone on anymore without taking a break. He looked down at his arm, finding the faded scars that once were bleeding and putting him into a hospital just like this one.
"Before you, I did this," Gray said, holding up his arm to emphasize his point. "I hurt myself. I missed my mom. I still do, but you helped me get over it. You helped me move on."
The black haired teenager peered at Juvia's face, smiling sadly at the beautiful sight.
"You make me so happy, Juvia," he whispered. "Every time I see you, I light up. Your smile makes my heart beat faster than it ever has. I just want to get lost in your eyes and never leave. You keep me sane."
Again, he kissed Juvia's soft hand, gently squeezing it. His dark eyes then stared at the fair maiden on the bed before moving closer to the bed.
Gray felt himself smile while tears trailed down his face. He looked at the ceiling before whispering, "This is what you meant, wasn't it?"
<・・・・・・>
"What is 'love', Daddy?"
The light of a flickering candle next to the bed made a crackling sound, illuminating the room with its warm glow. The two Fullbuster males sat in the small single bed together, looking at the ceiling. Well, Gray was more laying on his father since the bed was so small, but it wasn't a problem to the two.
"What do you mean, Gray? You know what love is," Gray's father replied, his normal smirk sitting upon his lips.
"I only know what family love is like, Daddy. Like how I feel for you and Mommy," Gray replied, sitting upon his father's stomach to look down and meet his eyes. "But I don't know what love is. I want to know, Daddy. Explain it to me!"
Silver chuckled, sighing before propping himself up against the headboard to keep himself awake and alert. He ran a hand through his dark hair, the edges beginning to turn a shade of silver to match the man's name.
"Love is when you'd do anything for that person, just to keep them close to you. Its when you brighten up whenever you see them, even if your day is crap," Silver began. His eyes seemed to sparkle as he spoke, making Gray only more interest in his father's speech.
"You know you love someone when you feel their pain in your heart. When your love is gone, you feel like the world is too. Love is special, son. Its more than even I can explain to you."
"How'd you know you loved Mama?" Gray asked, smiling at the thought of love between two people. He was fascinated by the work and what came with it.
"Because your mama makes me happy son. She's my stars, my moon, my sun. She's my life. I love her dearly, and there's not a thing anyone can do to change that. She's the most beautiful woman I have ever seen and also the happiest. She's my hero, Gray," Silver said, looking nowhere in particular, just thinking. Thinking about his love for his wife who was just out the door. Thinking of how he'd hug her after the little one went down. Thinking of how he'd show her his affection.
"I wanna love someone too, Daddy," Gray whined, crossing his arms in front of him.
Silver chuckled and sit the remained of the way up in the bed. He lifted Gray off of him and onto the soft pillow before crawling out of the small bed. He leaned down and gently kissed Gray's cheek while also ruffling his hair.
"You'll find someone someday, Gray," Silver replied, walking over to the side of the bed where the candle promptly sat.
"What do you mean, Daddy?" Gray questioned, stuffing himself under the covers while gazing at his father with wondering eyes.
"You'll understand someday. Someday you'll love someone as much as I love your mother."
Then the light went out.
<・・・・・・>
"He was right," Gray whispered, almost inaudibly, to the sleeping fair maiden. "Every single word he said was right."
The male gently wet his tongue with saliva, hoping to get a few more words out before he couldn't go on any longer.
"Your pain is my pain, Juvia. You're my hero. You're the girl I've been waiting for. You're the girl my dad told me about," Gray said, taking a deep breath. "I can't lose that girl. I've waited since I was seven for true love. I've finally found it, and I'm about to lose it."
The tears again were falling, but this time they were more heavy. They weren't going to stop this time.
"Please, Juvia," Gray begged, laying his head on the bed next to her, letting his tears soak into the sheets. "Come back to me. Give me a sign or something!"
Beeeeeeeeep
A long, loud beep filled the room, sending Gray's eyes to the monitor that sat above Juvia. A flat line sat where a normal regular beat normally was.
Suddenly, a large group of nurses and doctors filled the room, pushing the high schooler out of their way.
"I'm sorry, sir," the nurse from before said, grabbing onto Gray's shoulder's, making him jump. "You're going to have to leave now."
"No, please!" Gray screamed, reaching for Juvia yet again but was forced back by a gaggle of nurses. He was outnumbered, not to mention the fact he was weak from crying and not eating. He was forced out of the room, and the white door was slammed in his face. He couldn't see her anymore. Her blue hair was no longer in sight.
But then again..
She gave him a sign.
