Those were the worst eight seconds of Gray's life. The screeching of tires, Juvia's screams, the sounds of metal hitting metal, the beeps of the line going dead. All sounds filled Gray's head and would not be forgotten.
"Juvia!"
His voice was shaky as he screamed into the receiver of the phone, tears filling his eyes. They silently slid down his face as he hid in the bathroom of Jellal's house.
"Juvia, please!"
But even Gray knew it was hopeless. The line was dead. Juvia could no longer hear him.
Gray pulled his phone from his ear, looking down at the screen. His mouth was wide open, and his hands were shaking. Tears fell from his eyes onto the glowing screen of the phone. He fell to the ground, making a loud sound as tears continued to fall and wet his entire face.
Not ten seconds after falling, a knock slammed on the bathroom door.
"Gray?" Natsu's voice called, sounding more annoyed than worried. "You alright in there?"
But the words would not longer come. Gray couldn't speak or breath or move. He was immobile.
"Gray? Come on, we already lost Juvia tonight. You don't need to go crazy too."
Then Gray lost it. Just the thought of losing Juvia. Hearing Natsu say those words. A scream escaped Gray's mouth as he sat on the floor, covering his ears and rocking back and forth. He had to get up. He had to move. He had to get to Juvia.
Next came the hurried efforts of Natsu trying to open the locked doors and loud bangs as his fists hid the door.
"Gray, open the goddamn door!" Natsu screamed, more worry in his voice. Never had Gray cried or screamed like this since his mom died. Something was wrong, and Natsu knew it.
The bloodcurdling screams of Gray brought the other teenagers to the door and a teary Natsu who continued to attempt to open the door to no prevail.
"Gray! Let me in!" Natsu commanded, tears falling down his own face at the pain of his best friend.
Suddenly, a hand appeared on Natsu's shoulder, causing him to quickly turn around. Behind him was Lucy with a very concerned look on her face. Natsu gripped the sides of her arms and yelled, "Get Gray out! Help him! He's not okay! Please!"
Lucy began to breath hard, and she pulled Natsu toward her as he attempted to pull away for another fight against the door.
"Jellal! Get him out!" Natsu pleaded, attempting to pull away from Lucy's grasp. "Someone help him! Someone!"
The screams continued inside the bathroom with an occational 'Juvia!' leaving Gray's mouth at the same time.
Jellal panicked and rushed through the other teenagers toward the door. He reached above the door and grabbed the hidden key. He hurriedly placed the key in the lock, his hands shaking as doing so. He forced the door open, and the teenagers were met with a horrendous sight.
Gray was sitting against the wall, his hands against his ears. His eyes were tightly squeezed shut and screams escaped his mouth every second. Tears covered his face and wet his clothes. His hair was no longer under the hat and was in a messy tousle above his head, falling into his wet eyes.
Erza pushed everyone aside, rushing forward to Gray's side. She knelt down, tears brimming her eyes. Just like Natsu, this was the first time she had seen Gray in such a disgrace in years.
"Gray," she said calmly, placing a hand on his shoulder. It was accepted by the weeping male, but he didn't quit. "What's wrong? What I can do?"
Gray's breathing wasn't right as it came out in short heaves.
"J-J-J-J-Juvia!"
It was the only thing he could say to explain the mess. It was all.
"Gray, you gotta tell me. I need to know what you m-."
And then it became incredibly quiet.
Sirens.
Gray immediately rose, pushing everyone aside. He began to run through the house toward the closest window. He looked out it to see several police cars rushing by, an ambulance right behind it. Several fire trucks followed behind, but they were all headed to the same place.
"Gray?" Lucy asked, coming up behind him to gently touch his shoulder. But he quickly shrugged her off, racing for the door.
He didn't stop to grab anything. Not even is shoes. He opened the door and followed the sounds of sirens, running all the way.
〈・・・・〉
The site was the worst of it all. If hearing the accident happen wasn't enough, seeing the site of the crash took the last life out of Gray.
It took fifteen minutes of running for Gray to finally find the emergency vehicles. He arrived with heavy breathing and tears still stuck to his face. His face twisted as his mouth dropped open at the sight ahead of him.
One car lay upside down on the edge of the street, crushed on almost all sides. It looked horrible and blood was splattered on the window. Why, of all things, did Gray have to know that that was Gajeel's car?
The other care was almost perfectly intact. Only the front end was banged up. The driver sat next to the car, perfectly fine except for few scraps and bruises. But there was no Juvia. There was no extraordinary blue hair.
Gray rushed toward the sight, only to be stopped by a large man.
"No entry, sir," he said in a rough voice, crossing his arms in front of him.
"You have to let me in," Gray pleaded, attempting to look around the man but no avail. "My friend was in that accident! I need to know if she's okay."
"No entry, sir," the guard replied, not seeming to be able to budge.
Gray felt his body begin shaking again. He had to see her. He had to find her.
Gray pulled away from the large guard, nodding to him before scaling the area. But, naturally, Gray couldn't focus. Instead, he turned back towards the site of the crash and began running. He rushed pass the guard before he could stop him, ripping the police tape. He rushed toward Gajeel's car as people screamed at him to stop.
Before reaching the car, he was stopped by a man knocking him onto his knees and his arms being held by another person.
"The girl in the car! Is she okay? I love her, I need her, please!" Gray screamed at the people holding them, attempting to keep him close to the ground.
The other teenagers stood by the police line, watching Gray go crazy. They then noticed the car, and they each realized what had happened. Why Gray had run down here. What was going on.
"Juvia!" Gajeel screamed, attempting to run forward through the police tape, following the same path as Gray. But he was stopped by Levy grabbed his arm and heaving him back.
"Gajeel, please!" Levy screamed, tears falling down her face. "I can't have you going crazy too. Please!"
"THE GIRL IN THE CAR. WHERE IS THE GIRL IN THE CAR?"
Everything went quiet as Gray's scream pierced the air, silencing everyone.
"She's in here," one of the workers said, opening the ambulance door.
The blue hair.
The blue hair was the first thing Gray saw. The second, was the blood.
