If I wasn't obvious enough in the description, this story includes Johnny x Dally.
I ship it.
I ship it HARD.
However, I don't think it's realistic that they were Secretly Dating or Kissing Behind Things or Gallivanting Around Gaily (both ways).
Due to the setting (Oklahoma, 1960s), most people who were gay didn't understand their feelings. It would be confusing or frightening to develop romantic feelings about one of their friends or any member of the same sex.
I have tried to be as realistic as possible in this story as to what they might actually have been thinking. No Secret Dating for Johnny and Dally. Just a lot of blushing and urges to hold Johnny in a tight embrace for ever and ever and keep him safe.
My headcanon is that Ponyboy was an unreliable narrator and didn't see everything that was happening in front of his face. He took Johnny's infatuation for idolization and Dally's protectiveness for friendship.
