Monday June 3rd

The next day at school all my friends were happy to see me. They were talking non-stop. Telling me what they did and where they went on vacations. Kelly went to Greece to visit her family. I wish I could go to Greece. If I could go anywhere I wanted, that’s where I’d go.

Later that day...

While I was walking home I saw Jake. He was sitting on a bench doing a cross word puzzle in the newspaper. “Hey, how’s it going?” I asked sitting down beside him.

“Fine.” he looked up from his puzzle. “Your Lindsey, right.” well DURHH, i screamed in my mind

“Yeah, you remembered me.” I replied sarcastically.

“How could I forget someone that randomly came up to me on the beach. Then started freaking out over being in pain.”

“Don’t talk about my pain.”

“I didn’t want you asking me what was wrong the other day.” He folded up his newspaper. “You need to take better care of yourself first of all.”

“I do take care of myself. I can’t help everything that happens to me.”

“I suppose that’s true.” My stomach growled. “Want to get something to eat?” he asked me. I agreed and we went to Denny’s. It seems like it’s been forever since I’d been here, I had French Toast and root beer. He had an omelet and a milkshake.

“That was great.” Jake said. “It’s getting dark. I’d better walk you home.”

“Okay.” I’m glad he’s happy today. I don’t like to see people upset.

“What song is that?” he asked.

I had no idea what he was talking about. “Huh?” I was totally confused.

“You were humming. What song was it?”

“I didn’t even realize I was humming. Does it bother you?”

“No, I think I’ve heard the song before but I can’t put a name to it.” He hummed a verse. “I hate when that happens.”

“Your not the only one.” I thought about it. “Oh, I know! It’s ‘here comes goodbye’ by Rascal Flatts.”

“Are you sure?”

I started singing it. But I got lost after the first chorus. “I can’t remember the rest of it.”

I heard Jake let out a chuckle. “Sorry, I don’t mean to laugh.”

“Am I really that bad of a singer?”

“Actually your pretty good. It’s just funny when you tripped over some of the words.” We spent the rest of the time walking home trying to figure out the second verse of the song. Jake is a pretty good singer. I like his voice. We would crack up whenever one of us messed up. “Hey,” he said when we got to the door. “Do you want to go to the beach tomorrow?”

I was surprised by his question. I wasn’t expecting it. “Um, sure.” I was glad he asked though.

“I’ll meet you at the bench I was sitting on at 4 o’ clock, sound good?”

“Yeah. See ya then.” I went inside. Tom was working on the puzzle. I sat down and started to help him.

Then Tom started asking questions. “Who’s that guy you were with? Is he your boyfriend?” he had a huge grin spread across his face.

“No, he’s just a friend.”

He nodded and looked at me skeptically. “Why were you late?”

“We went to Denny’s. Mom and dad worked late so it doesn’t matter.”

“Oh, you went on a date.” his grin was growing with each passing second. “And you have another one tomorrow. What’s his name?” he asked as he put a piece into place.

“His name is Jake. And we’re going to the beach at four. How did you know I was going out tomorrow?”

“I have my ways.” Whatever. He can be so irritating. He always knows everything. Well, almost everything. We spent about an hour working on the puzzle. Then we watched a movie and had some popcorn. Mom and dad came home. Mom complained  about her work. Dad told us a really stupid joke one of his co-workers told him. When I got tired of listening to them I went to bed. My family is so weird.
