I had to leave Nina unattended for a short while, while I tried to get to Darlene before he did. My lips refused to move, so actions were the options for now. Darlene held the machine gun, like a pro, aiming it at the wall that the remaining men hid behind. I grabbed a loose rope, the one used to tie Nina, off the ground.
Once I was close enough, I wrapped it around Chris' neck just as he was about to grab a hold of Darlene's jeans. I didn't have much physical strength, so I couldn't hold him for long.
"Nina," I called. She looked at me, ready to run whatever I was about to throw her way. "Go find the boys." That meant Caleb and his brother, Gabriel. I just knew they were in the house. She had to get them out so we could flee before things got too complicated for us to handle.
Chris' fingernails tore at my skin, as he tried to work the rope off his neck.
"This isn't having any effect on me, Zoe," he said in a perfectly clear voice. Which meant I was nowhere close to choking him. But I didn't let that discourage me, in fact, I pulled it the tightest I could. As long as it meant that he was at least under my control for a few seconds. Darlene swiftly came around to my side, no longer in front of Chris.
"I don't think they'll fire for now," she said, checking the amount of ammo that was remaining. "We only have three shots left." I nodded in understanding, tightening my grip on the ropes. "We can hold him for long," Darlene concluded as she noticed sweat building at my palms.
"It's better than nothing," I replied. She nodded and got to her feet. "Where are you going?"
"We both know that Nina's not going to find the boys by herself... at least not today," she replied. I chuckled in response as she quickly trotted away, entering the house through the back door.
"You're not going to get out of here alive." I peered down on Chris' head and gave him a hard thud on it. "That's not going to change anything," he replied after grunting a bit. I squinted at the sky above, noticing that clouds were starting multiply. When were the police going to get here? I inhaled a large of air to calm my nerves. "I'm just giving you a chance to make things right." I frowned down at him.
"That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm turning you over to the police." He chuckled softly and merely shrugged.
"You think that's going to bring Candace back?" I couldn't see his face since his back was to me, but I could sense his smugness radiating off his body. He was proud that he killed someone. This guy was a true definition of a sociopath. My arms were beginning to hurt, so I left the rope loose a little, feeling my muscles aching from them being contracted the whole time. Without warning, Chris gripped my wrists (Wrist - Chris Brown... I'm sorry, I couldn't stop myself), tightening his grasp until I could feel the pain passing right through my bones. "Ugh," I groaned, grinding my teeth to prevent myself from yelling out in pain.
At the same time, I began to wonder whether those armed guys hadn't noticed that Darlene had left a good while back. And Chris and I were right in the open... They probably refrained from shooting knowing that there'd be a greater chance that they'd hit their boss before they hit me. Chris slowly removed my hand from the rope, passing it over his head, and then releasing my hand. I breathed a sigh of relief as the blood began to flow through my fingers.
I thought he was done with me, but apparently, he wasn't. He laced his fingers around my ankle, and forcefully pulled me through the dead leaves that laid on the ground, to the wall where his men were hiding.
"Guys, I'm good now," he called, are we neared the wall in front of the house, close to the main road. There was utter silence. "Guys, no need to be in stealth mode anymore," he said. Finally, we reached the wall, and he gripped onto the edges. "Come on, fucking answer me!" Once he peered over to the other side, I saw nothing but pique on his face. He glowered at a sight before him, while I, on the other hand, had no idea what he was staring at. He turned his crazed eyes to me, baring his teeth at me like some wild animal. "Your stupid friend did this!" he yelled, his voice ringing through the forest. He bent over and grasped me by my neck, pulling me to the scene he'd been gazing. To my surprise, all three men that were left, and a red spot in the middle of their head, blood oozing out and their guns scattered all over the place. A smile crept onto my lips. "You think this is funny?" he growled. He picked up on of the guns that laid on the corpses' side. "Wait till you see what I'll do to you!"
"What are you doing?" I asked, a bit startled at how violent he'd become over the few minutes that lapsed. He laughed bitterly and pointed the gun at me. In the background, I heard vehicles approaching, but Chris was too occupied to have noticed.
"I'm going to kill you," he replied delightedly. What a sick bastard... He raised the gun to my head, and I closed my eyes, just to make it less realistic.
"Police! Put your weapons down!"
