Joe entered the house. He hasn't been there since it happened. He stayed at Caspar and Elodie's for the past few days for the sake of having a distraction. Returning to the house would trigger memories, and he wasn't sure if he was ready for that. However, he knew it was inevitable and he had to return someday.
The scent of jasmine greeted him as he slowly walked around. Em had developed a habit of lighting up a jasmine scented candle everytime she gets home, which she was extremely proud of. Joe got to the table where the candles were placed and he replaced the melted candle with a new one.
He didn't know how it was possible for such a small action to make his heart so heavy. And he tried so hard to not tear up, but he did. No, he didn't cry, but it didn't mean he didn't know that Emery wouldn't be able to do this anymore. He wouldn't be able to see her rush through the door after they had just gone out and smile as she lit up the candle. So, he closed his eyes and tried to remember the last time he saw her do so. He tried clinging to the memory he had because he knows memories could fade so quickly, and his memories with her are ones he wouldn't want to forget.
The weight of his bag started to get to him and he realised that he'd been standing there for quite a while now. The slight pain in his legs as he walked towards the bedroom proved it. And the heaviness in his heart didn't help in lessening the burden.
