When I get home, I instantly run to my room to change clothes. I had told Shawn a location that I'm sure no one would find us at.
"Why are you in such a hurry?" I hear, and turn to face Nora, standing at the door.
"Going with Amber and Adam to a party, don't tell Mom or Dad though. I trust you." Is the lie that spits out of my mouth.
"Adam seems to like you a lot. Are you sure it's not a date, and Amber is third wheeling?"
"No, you're right. I'm on a date, but it's not with Adam." I tell her, and her eyes widen in surprise.
"Oh, with whom?" She asks curiously, and I give her a smirk.
"Shawn Mendes." I say, and she rolls her eyes at me.
"Have fun at the party!" She yells after walking away. It takes a few more minutes to get ready, and then grab my bag. By the time I was out the door, it was ten pm. I had half an hour to get there. And without a car, it was going to take twenty minutes to walk there.
So I began walking.
The streets were pretty crowded, and I wasn't the only one walking to go somewhere. The sidewalks were filled with people, so my fears of walking alone at night diminished quickly.
Finally I reach the building, and walk to the back, glad there wasn't anyone sitting there. I grab the ladder that was built onto the old building, and begin to climb. My heart almost stops when I hear talking in the roof. From what I could tell it was just a normal conversation, no yelling or sound of things crashing. Just as I start to climb closer to the roof and listen to the conversation in case Shawn is a part of it, my hand slips, causing me to give a not so silent gasp.
The talking stops instantly.
I slowly climb up to the roof, terrified I'll face someone that isn't Shawn. Just as my hand reaches the last bar of the ladder, I hear a voice again.
"Hello?"
"Hey." I say after getting up onto the roof. Instantly I feel that something is off. My eyes search the area before landing on Shawn, and I can't contain my smile any longer.
"About what happened before-" Shawn says, his voice monotone.
"I don't want to talk about that. Let's just forget that happened." I tell him, then giving him a questioning look as to why he was so still. His eyes only looked at the floor, and when I stepped closer to him he made no attempt to look up.
"Are you okay Shawn?" I ask, and reach for his hand. The second I touch him his body stiffens, and he finally lifts his eye contact from the floor to my eyes. His expression is both apologetic and scared. But it looks as if he's scared for me, not himself.
"I'm so so sorry." Shawn says, before hugging me. Up to now I still don't have a clue what he was apologizing for. As we stay in a hug, I whisper into his ear.
"Meet me at the café in half an hour. And please don't act like this there, your scaring me." I tell him, before pulling away and walking to the ladder. Just before I'm about to leave I look around once more, and finally notice what was so off.
The door. This building was locked, and no one had gotten in here in a good amount of time. But there was still a staircase that would get you up onto the roof, and the door to get into the building and out into the roof was open.
Which meant we weren't alone.
I bite my cheek before looking at Shawn and giving him a long, sorrowful look. Then I quickly go down the ladder, and before walking to Tim Horton's, I have to sit down for a moment and calm down. My brain was so confused, and my heart even more. I didn't have the slightest clue who was up there, or why Shawn was apologizing to me. Not to mention the look on his face. He was scared, and when Shawn is scared, I'm terrified.
So the only thing that could sort this out is a one on one talk at the café. I was more confused than ever, and Shawn wasn't going to leave until I fully understood what was going on.
I've been sitting right by the ladder this whole time, thinking about what could possibly be going on, and the strangest thing is that Shawn hasn't came down the ladder yet. It's been a full ten minutes too.
That's when it connected. There wasn't anybody up there. Instead Shawn had probably gotten in from the building, instead of the ladder. I walked to the front quickly and pulled on the door, only to find it unlocked.
Instantly I felt terrible for thinking Shawn had brought someone up there. In fact, he was probably at the café right now, thinking I had ditched him.
So that's when I start to run. I sprint towards Tim Horton's, towards Shawn. I have to spew many apologies as I bump into people, and ignore the rude remarks that come afterwards. I rush towards the street that the café sat in, and took a deep breath once I had finally reached it. I can't help but smile as I spot a hooded figure walking towards me, and wave. He waves back and as he gets closer, pulls off his hoodie.
I recognize this face instantly, but it isn't Shawn.
"Adam?" I ask, and he smiles.
"Hey, so I was walking home from the party when some guy ran over to me and gave me this. He said it was for you. I was expecting to have to go to your house since you didn't show up at the party, but I guess you made the trip shorter." Adam says, and hands me a folded up piece of paper. I thank him and tell him goodnight, before we both walk away from each other and I unfold the note. Expecting a letter, I only get two words.
I'm sorry.
