Sirens wailed, and I could hear the officer call in for back-up. I hadn't even opened my eyes from the kiss and Cody had bolted, and fast.

What's going on???

The cop that had first spotted Cody swiftly made his way to my side. "I have to ask you a few questions miss." I nodded, as fear raced through my head.

"How do you know Cody Stanson?" First question.
"Has Cody acted violently lately?" Second question.
"Has Cody hurt me in any way?" Third question, followed by a few extras.

I finally got my head cleared and replied, "Officer, what are Cody's charges?" Afraid of the answer, but the cop gave me a stern look and said, "Cody is charged with assault and theft."

Assault and theft. The guy I had just kissed.......assaulted and robbed someone?

Cody was this great guy, he didn't seem like the type to commit a crime.

I felt a rush of anger knowing Cody wasn't telling me the truth.

The police thanked me and said to call them if I knew or saw where Cody was going.

Immediately I drove home, only wondering of what Cody had done, but something in my head just knew Cody was still good. He saved me, when he could've let Tim take me away. The police must've been wrong, there was no way Cody was a bad person...or was he? My anger had boiled down but I still felt like Cody betrayed me.

The next day at school there was no sign of Cody, if he was on the run, he definitely wouldn't come to school Ellie...Alyssa noticed my uneasiness at lunch, "Are you okay Ellie? You seem to be distracted." And I was, my eyes kept scanning the lunchroom, as if I thought he was going to appear somewhere.

"What if I told you I think I like someone....but he may be on the run from cops." Alyssa's eyes widened, "You can't tell a soul," I added.

Alyssa held out her pinky, "Pinky promise, hope to die." I sealed the promise with my own pinky, a tradition Alyssa and I started a few weeks back, silly, but held a lot of meaning.

"So give me all the juicy details," Alyssa spilled, ogling over my life as if she didn't have any interesting magazine to snoop and I was the hot headline.

"It's......Cody Stanson..." I followed, watching her face turn in disappointment. "Ellie, really?" she questioned. I nodded, and held my head in my hands and let out an exasperated sigh.

"Everyone's saying he's killed a guy, and headed to Canada to make a new life for himself," Alyssa pointed out, but I chuckled, the school sure had a funny way of relaying information. I cleared my throat, "No, I asked the cop and he told me his charges were assault and robbery." And Alyssa's face cracked a smile, "Whew, for a second I thought you had gone all loopy and decided to crush on a psycho!" She giggled.

I giggled too, but all of a sudden became quiet. "I really want to know what happened," I spoke. Alyssa gave a "I understand you" look and quietly replied, "For the record, he's pretty attractive for a junior."

I half-smiled, "Actually he's 18 like us, just held back a year."

"Oh, well then, even better!" Alyssa uttered. With Alyssa there was always a bright side to something, that's what I enjoyed most about her. Ever since the day in the hallway Alyssa and I had spent a few sleepovers together, and gone to the mall. And bonded well, we called ourselves the Dynamic Senior Duo, as both of us were not really part of any group, but we didn't mind we had each other and that's what mattered.

As the school day neared the end, an voice came over the P.A system in my science classroom and asked for me to go to the principal's office. I ignored the classroom's immature "oooooo"s for trouble even though I knew that I wasn't.

As I walked down the hall I wondered if this meeting had anything to do with Cody.

The door to the principal's office swung open, presenting a tall, but stout man with a gray beard. No one really saw our principal, but I greeted him warmly, "Hello Mr. Waters," followed by his stern voice mentioning for me to take a seat.

He sat into his large-backed seat, mahogany in color, with a satin-looking fabric. He peered through the bottom of his glasses before looking up at me.

"It has come to my attention Miss Riding that your grades are not where they are supposed to be."

My face fell into a shocked expression, my voice cracked, "But how????"

"Apparently a few of your teachers have noticed you coming in late, and unprepared for class." He retorted, and at that statement  I knew he was right, I had been so distracted with the Cody situation to really focus on my homework.

"The problem is Miss Riding your grades from freshmen and sophomore year are not up to par either. The only thing that will make you be able to graduate this year and walk on stage is an extracurricular and some afternoons spent doing test-prep/SATs."

My heart sank, I really couldn't believe I was failing senior year.

And if I didn't hurry I would not be able to walk the stage with Alyssa.....and I would be held back.

"No!" I stammered, taking Mr. Waters aback, "I will do whatever it takes to get better grades, and find a surefire way to pass 12th grade." I said with a determined smile.

Mr. Waters gave me a warm grin, "I look forward to your progress, but as for extracurricular activities I'm signing you up for helping the drama department."

Alyssa was in the drama club.

Well, maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.

Later, as I pulled up into my driveway my phone buzzed, hoping it was from Alyssa as she would be estatic to know I'd be helping her with the production of their play.

I glanced at my phone, the number was unknown, but I clicked on the message, it read,

"El, it's me. Please come by the barn later tonight at 9. I have a lot to tell you."
