My mind flipped back to the summer. Back to the pain.

I gritted my teeth, trying to remain still as if to become invisible, watching his eyes shift uneasily in the crowd.

Until they landed on me. I darted my eyes away, and decided my best getaway option was to blend in. I immediately retreated into the group of people behind me and hid within my human circle of protection.

I could feel waves of nauseous ness, and the beads of sweat forming on my neck as I realized that my body had stiffened, like a scared cat.

Minutes passed, which felt longer, I prayed silently that he wouldn't find me, and as I breathed slowly, I noted it had been at least 10 minutes since he had seen me, I thought maybe I was safe.

Then a hand carefully placed itself on my shoulder, and my body tensed up again.

A low, familiar voice whispered into my ear, "Hello dear".

I shuddered, my body threatening to convulse, I had to swallowed the lump forming in my throat, as I dared my eyes to wander to the figure behind me.

Tim.

I wanted to scream and run, but the crowds around me were causing the getaway to be quite difficult.

Before I was able to move Tim took hold of my arm, and started dragging me towards the barn. I could feel my mouth trying to cry out but no sound came. I knew exactly what was going to happen.

It was going to happen all over again.

I wanted to curl into a ball and
disappear, disappear so Tim could never find me again.

Just before I thought it was the end, I realized Tim's hand was no longer locked onto my arm. I darted my eyes to see Cody standing in between Tim and I.

His back was towards me but I could tell he was angry.

A circle of faces crowded around what looked like a pre-fight. Cody's voice boomed over the music,

"What were you doing to Ellie??"

Tim was silent, but his eyes shifted to mine and he gave me a wink.

"It's been a while Codster," Tim spoke smoothly, giving Cody a devilish smile.

"You are an asshole." Cody spat, and with that he hurled a punch, square in Tim's face.

The impact make Tim fall over, his nose dripping with a bit of blood.

"Back to your old ways, huh?" Tim chuckled, wiping the blood away. I saw Tim's face and knew Cody just had to wipe the smirk off his face because he kicked Tim straight in the stomach.

A hard kick, full of his soccer-kicking power.

Tim moaned and the crowd gasped, I had wound up sitting on a hay bale, mostly from utter shock and relief that Tim wasn't going to hurt me.

"Don't ever touch El again," Cody commanded, "or else". Was his final threat.

Cody scrapped me off my feet, and still steaming whispered, "Come on Ellie, let's get out of here."

And the crowd diverged and everyone went about their partying, leaving Tim heaving on the ground.

Still baffled as we walked to the car, I handed Cody my keys. Tears started crawling down my cheeks again, "T-thank.....yy-you." I stuttered through tears.

Cody gave me a pained look and took me into a hug.

My wet face pressed against his strong chest, and I could feel his warmth through his T-shirt. I suddenly felt safe, like nothing was going to hurt me again.

I awkwardly pulled back, and wiped my face. Cody smiled, "No tears on that pretty face."

I hid my blush, and proceeded to wipe my face, "Want to go get a snack?" He questioned, "I need something to calm me down."

I nodded, realizing how grateful I was for Cody.

He then took his hand and pulled my face closer, he gave my forehead a light kiss and proceeded to open the door for me.

Why was Cody doing all this for me? I wasn't anything special, I didn't ask to be saved, yet here Cody was...my hero.
Although knowing he saved me irked me, like I had to repay him somehow.

As we sat on the hood of my car, downing M&Ms and chewing on Twizzlers, Cody spoke breaking the silence between us, "Ellie, I don't know what happened between you and Tim, but Tim changed. He used to be this great guy that I was good friends with back in the day, he paused, almost like he was remembering something, 'I don't know what happened to him, but he went dark. Like something really bad happened to him."

His statement puzzled me, had Tim changed before he met me? Why hadn't Tim told me everything when we were friends? I wondered what or who could've hurt Tim and changed him when suddenly Cody pulled my arm and entwined out fingers together.

"I like you El." Cody voiced, causing me to turn my head.

My mouth hung open in utter shock. Did I hear that right? Me? Ellie Riding? Confusion was bombarding my mind but before I realized it Cody's lips were pressed against mine. I could feel the heat rise to my face, my stomach buzzed and I felt light headed.

Stop it Ellie, stop falling for this guy.

Our lips parted and Cody gave a bashful smile, until someone behind us caught his attention.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!"

And the right and blue lights flickered on.
