I couldn't feel my arm, but I could feel a sharp pain shooting up through my back.
I flittered my eyes open, I was looking up at a bright light when I realized I was in an ambulance.
I tried to say something but my mouth was so dry I couldn't speak.
I heard the EMT's talking but I couldn't focus enough to hear what they were saying.
Now it's my turn in an ambulance.
A nurse leaned over me, patting my arm. I didn't know what she was saying but I felt better.
I darted my eyes beside me to see Amber with a bandage over her head.
She was sitting up and looking at me mouthing the words I'm sorry over and over.
I smiled weakly, even though I felt like I had been run over, perhaps I had been.
We reached the hospital and I was looked after immediately.
My mother showed up shortly after although I wasn't sure how long she had been there, I opened my eyes and she was beside me.
"Oh Ellie," she cried, rubbing my cheek with a few tears falling down her face.
"Wa--ter," I croaked, my mother then reaching for the glass beside her and pushing it to my lips
The cool relief washed down my throat and I tried to speak, "What happ-d? Whe-'s Ambr?" I whispered, having trouble forming the words.
My mother rubbed my arm with sympathy in her eyes, "You and Amber were almost hit by someone. Luckily Amber swerved and hit a tree as opposed to the oncoming car," tears filling her eyes, "you both suffered concussions but you sweetie had some internal bruising and a broken arm."
I noted the heavy cast embalming my left arm, luckily I had some pain killers so I couldn't feel anything.
"I'm still disappointed about you skipping school, but we'll talk about that later," Mom spoke.
My eyes felt heavy and I could feel the sleepiness start to kick in again, my mother kissed my forehead as I closed my eyes.
I don't know how long I was sleeping but I drifted in and out of consciousness hearing snippets of conversations between my mother or the doctor.
I finally woke, noticing the room was dark, I must have been sleeping for a long time.
I looked over to the bedside chair, which was empty. I didn't know where my mom went but as I felt my stomach growl hungrily and decided to venture out of my room.
I carefully sat up, trying not to put pressure on my broken arm, I groaned as the soreness of my body hit me.
I dared my feet to wiggle off the bed and touch the cold, tile floor.
I slowly shoved myself upwards, grabbing the side rail of the bed for support.
Success!
I let my feet adjust for a minute before I dared walking, my body felt weighted, probably unaccustomed to the cast on my arm, and from lying down for who knows how long.
I shuffled my way out of the room and noticed nurses scurrying everywhere, strange beeping noises echoed the white hallways, and then I noticed the sign for the cafeteria.
I slowly but surely went in the direction of the cafe, a busy nurse with a man coughing in a wheelchair breezed past me.
I made it to the door opening to the cafe when I heard a familiar voice.
I peeked around the door to see my mother, holding what looked like food for me, and Cody Stanson talking to her.
Cody???? Here???
I grumbled, I really wasn't in a mood to see him.
I quickly shuffled back to my room, and shortly after my mother walked in, placed the sandwich and Diet Coke I had spied next to me on the table.
I greeted her with a smile but it soon disappeared as my eyes went to door where Cody was awkwardly standing.
I sighed, and my mother just winked at me and said she'd be back in a bit.
I held back a smart ass remark because I thought better of it.
I blinked a few times, looking at Cody shift uneasily on his feet.
"You going to stand there all night or what?" I huffed, irritated that he had come.
He slowly made his way over to my bed, sitting on the chair beside me.
There was a uncomfortable silence growing between us, and I absent mindedly bit the corner of my lip and picked at my cast.
Cody turned his head towards me, and I noticed his eyes were red and puffy.
It looked like he had been crying.
He breathed heavily, holding back from crying again, "Ellie.... I thought... I thought you were dead," he stumbled over his words, "I.... I don't know what I would've done. I know I'm not a good person El, I don't do good things, and you have no reason to believe me or trust me.
But I have decided El.... I'm going to change. The thought of losing you really shook me up. I knew right then that things were going to be different.
Ellie..." His words were growing quieter, but my heartbeat was steadily increasing at his words, "Ever since we met when we were young, I've been in love with you ever since."
I could feel my cheeks flush, he remembered us? I thought he didn't remember. In a few moments all the irritation and annoyance dissipated, butterflies tickled my stomach, and no matter how I tried to fight it there was a strange feeling rising.
Cody's hand clasped mine, opening my hand and placing something inside it.
Surprised, I looked down to see a piece of a baby pink seashell.
It glimmered and shone even in the dim hospital lighting.
I knew what this was.
I had the other piece of the shell in my jewelry box. But I had forgotten where it came from.
Found in pieces under all the sand in our sandbox, it was our childhood treasure.
Tears prickled my eyes, but in a flash Cody's lips were pressed to mine.
Devouring my lips as the kiss went deeper, Cody cupped my face one of his thumbs rubbing my cheek.
He was carefully hovering over my cast, but I felt my good arm wrap around him, the kiss warming every part of me.
We broke apart, and the electricity died down, he rested his forehead against mine. We were both a little breathless.
For some reason I tried to mull around in my brain how and why I was so attracted to Cody.
He wasn't right, he had been with that girl while he kissed me. He lied to me.
Cody's hand grabbed mine almost like he was reading my thoughts and replied, "I'm not dating that girl anymore remember? She left me while I was in that detention, center."
I nodded, chewing on my lip. I had no idea what to do. I just sighed loudly and leaned back against the bed.
"I'll be around tomorrow Ellie," Cody spoke, and gave a short wave before exiting the room.
And as I examined the little seashell, it's grooves matching the ones I had, they were missing pieces, and they belonged together.
Even though they were different pieces, misshapen and broken on their own, they came together to form one piece. Whole, beautiful, unique.
Maybe that how Cody and I were supposed to be.....
