Judging by the way they're dressed, Josh safely assumes he's a boy. The boy sits on the swing beside him and lets himself fall back, then he flies forward. He's swinging peacefully. Yet, Josh is staring at him and he can't get over the fact that the boy is wearing a ski mask. He doesn't question it. He just keeps swinging, removing one earbud just in case he speaks.
They stay that way for another hour before Josh looks at the time, he has to leave. So, he jumps off the swing and falls down in the pit of wood chips. Whatever happened to sand? One of the pieces digs into his palm and he winces, trying to pull it out.
The other boy ceases to swing and is now hovering over Josh. He kneels down and takes Josh's hand, pinching the surrounding skin and pulls out the splinter. Josh doesn't say a word, shivering at his touch, but he doesn't dare to speak. He looks up and notices his eyes, they're soaked and dripping; he's crying.
"Hey, are you o-"
Before he finishes his sentence, the other boy is back on his feet and he runs. He runs very far and very fast. There's nothing Josh can do, he can only watch him disappear into the darkness. Josh returns home quietly, he didn't even bother to put on music, his mind kept him company.
He fell asleep dreaming, dreaming of the boy in the white mask.
