I dreamt of the sun last night. It was big, and bright, and I was going closer to it. My body felt warm, clouds swirled around me, and I was happy.
Then I woke up. I remembered everything that had happened and why my parents told me. My heart sank. It was 7:30 am.
I tried to go back to sleep, but I just couldn't. So I got up, put on a thin jacket, and my UGG boots and walked out the back door. The sun had just risen and lit up the whole sky.
It was a little chilly, but a beautiful day. A fresh breeze ran through my long dark hair. I wished my summer would last. But now I was going somewhere I was scared to go. I wouldn't get to really I outside much, unless I set aside some time to every week.
I stayed out there a while, when I heard "oh Opal! You're awake! Good, because I forgot to tell you to wake up early." I turned around to see mom standing in the doorway. "why would I have to wake up early?" I asked.
"Well, because I'm taking you to the school for a tour." She said quietly.
UGH. I didn't want to go to that dumb school. But I thought I might as well go, because if they were gonna make me start school, I didn't want to get lost.
I got up and walked inside, without saying a word to mom. Then I changed into light green shorts, and a coral tank top. I also put on my opal ring.
I slipped on some sandals and went out to the car. I didn't feel like eating breakfast. Mom came out shortly after, hopped in, and started the car. We drove through the trees on the dirt road into the city.
"Opal..." my mom started. "I know this isn't easy for you, starting real school. But its going to be better than you think. It's a really nice Jr. high, and can give you much more eduction than dad and I can."
I didn't answer. I honestly didn't know what to say. mom sighed.
We arrived at the school ten minutes later. The name of it was :
MOUNTAIN VIEW JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Seemed ok I guess. We hopped out of the car and walked through the front doors.
The hallways were long and wide. I could tell that the school colors were dark yellow and navy. It smelled like a school.
We started to walk down the hallway. I wasn't really sure where we were going. My mom had a ton of papers in her hand, so I was assuming we were finding my classes.
The lockers were half lockers, and navy blue. We found my locker near the commons area. "Try opening it." Mom said. She showed me the piece of paper with the combination on it. 23-05-29. "Wait before you try, you need to know how." mom said. "turn it a couple times, then stop at your first number. Then make a full circle around your second number. Then, go left to the third." Wow. That was a lot to remember just to open a locker.
After 5 tries I finally got that stupid thing open. Who knows what will happen when I have to do it on the first day. The locker was also navy inside. It had one shelf, nothing else.
"You know, to make this more interesting we could get some of that Locker Lounge Wallpaper! Ooh! and a chandler!" my mom said excitedly.
"Um no, it's ok mom. I'm fine with how the locker is."
Her smile faded. "oh... ok.."
I felt bad, because she was
only trying to make this whole thing more exciting for me.
The rest of mom's little tour around the school for me was spent looking for my classes . On A days, my classes were mostly upstairs. On B days though, they were downstairs, and mostly the boring ones like math and English.
We drove home in silence. Once again, I ha that scared feeling. Tears started to shine in my eyes.
"No." I thought to myself. "You're NOT going to cry Opal." I was going to be strong. I wasn't gonna be a baby and cry over something as dumb as school.
We pulled into the driveway. Before we walked into the house, I said to mom, "mom... I'm sorry. I'm just scared. But I'll try. I really will try to do this." She smiled and gave me a hug. "Oh Opal. You are much stronger than you think."
