Chapter 10
✷ The Science Project ✷
Opal's POV
This morning on the bus, Bryce sat with me again. Not because there was no where else though, because he wanted to. There were plenty of other spots and he chose to sit with me. That makes me so happy!
We talked and laughed together, then got off the bus and walked inside together as well.
I wanted to hang out with him more, but I had to go to class.
I walked into the science room, and sat down next to Lexi, as usual. On the board, a reminder was written.
Be sure to keep working on your science project with your lab partner! It said. They are due in two weeks!
Two weeks? We really needed to get going.
"Lexi, we really need to start on our science project. Can you come to my house after school?"
She gave me a disgusted look. "I really don't see what the rush is. Who cares if we turn it in late?"
"Um, I do. I wanna get a good grade. " What's her problem? If she doesn't care about school why does she bother coming?
"Fine. I can't today but I'll come tomorrow." She said.
I gave her my address on a little piece of paper.

At lunchtime, Rose and I met at our usual spot and headed to our table. On the way, she said,
"Opal, I really loved your writing yesterday. I only got to read a little bit but I could tell it was amazing."
"Oh thanks!" I said blushing.
"The drawings were good, too."
"Really? I was just doodling. I never thought they were actually good." I replied.
"No, they were great!" Rose said.
We found everyone else and sat down with our lunch. I'm at the point where I'm not scared to talk to them anymore. I can laugh, tease, and joke around with them. I feel like I've really become apart of the group. And for some reason, I don't know why, but that means the world to me.

It was the next day, the day Lexi came over to work on the project. I was a little nervous. What would she think of a house away from the city? Would she criticize it in front of my parents? Would she make fun of my clothes and room?
The school day went by really quickly. After the last period I found Lexi an made sure she was still coming.
She groaned. "Forgot about that. Yeah, fine."
Did she have to show how much she was dreading it? Made me even more nervous.
I rode the bus home as usual. I felt like talking to Bryce but he only rides it in the morning.
I walked in the front door to the house.
"Hi sweetie. How was your day?" Mom asked. It smelled really good in the kitchen.
"It was ok. So mom, remember I have a girl from science coming over in a little bit to work on our project?" I replied.
"Yes, that's why I made these cookies." She said pointing she a tray of fresh chocolate chip cookies.
"Ok, I think she'll be here soon."
I went into my room and decided to start on homework while I waited. I looked at our science papers, where I'd already done most of the work. This was the easiest, most obvious science project question ever. " Does the amount of water given to a plant affect how it grows?" Um, of course it does. Everyone knew that.
