Rose's Rules

The rush of the wind

Flowing through my hair

The light of the sun

Warm on my face

The chill of the air

Rushing through my face

The soft green grass

Soothing my skin

I don't get these wonderful things inside

When I open my back door another world awaits me

And I plan to see it.

I dotted that last 'i' and put my pencil down. Another poem I had come up with randomly. Usually I do most of my writing at home, but this time I was in my Creative Writing class.

"Ok class, the bell rings in five minutes, and I want to hear some of your poems," The teacher said. "Any volunteers who want to share their writing?"

No one raised their hand. No way I wanted to, not with more people I didn't know. It had been my first week at the school and still my only friends were Rose's little group of friends. And even they seemed like they were only hanging out with me because they felt bad for me.

Still, no one volunteered to share their writing.

"No one?" The teacher said. "oh, c'mon! I'm sure some of you want to!"

The class was silent.

"Opal" She said. My head shot up. I didn't even know she knew my name yet. "how about you? Come up and share your writing with us!"

Oh no. I said nothing, and slowly got out of my chair, slipping my paper from the desk.

I walked as slow as I could to to the front of the room, already feeling a hundred eyes on me. And when I got up there, those hundred eyes seemed to multiply by ten.

"Umm.. it's kinda short, but um... here goes..."

I began to read my poem. My face felt like it was going redder with every word I spoke.

I finished the last sentence, and looked up from the paper I was holding in front of my face.

The class just stared with a bored look on their faces. They started to clap weakly, like they weren't sure what to do when I was finished.

"Splendid writing, Opal! Now, would anyone else like to go?" The teacher said.

I walked quickly back to my set and practically buried my head into it. I hoped my teacher never made me share again! I liked my writing on words, and to myself. Not spoken with the rest of the world.

The bell rang to leave class. The day was going by extremely slowly, and the bell seemed like it should've been the bell to leave school, not just fourth period.

I left the writing class, and made my way down the crowded hallway. Sadly, one of my favorite classes, Creative Writing, was in the scariest hallway of the whole school. You know, where all the goth kids hang out, and the ones the swear and always look like they wanna hurt you?

I can never get through this hall fast enough without hearing someone curse or get slammed against the locker with insults yelled in their face. It's a pretty depressing time of the day for me.

This time I ran down the hall extra fast, because I had a headache and needed quiet. Scary people yelling at each other wouldn't help.

When I finally got out of the Scary Hallway, I was relieved. I started to make my way down to my locker, when BAM I ran into someone.

All my things flew out of my hands and onto the floor. The person I ran into shrieked, "Oh my gosh! You need to watch where you're going! Geez, I just dropped my new bag!"

I recognized that voice. The voice of the person who was supposed to be helping me with the science project I spent the whole weekend on.

I looked up, and saw the angry, makeup covered face of Lexi.

"What's wrong with you?" She said rudely. "Never mind. You should pick up my things for making me drop them." She pointed to a nice lavender bag and a magazine on the hallway floor.

Where was all her school stuff? I guess she cared more about reading how "Jelena" broke up more than keeping caught up on her homework.

I picked them up and handed them I her. She snatched them out of my hands, and with a glare, she stomped away. Her long blond hair flicked in my face.

I walked the rest of the way to my locker slowly. I don't know why I felt sad. I had run into Lexi, so she had every right to be angry.

But would those rude things she said be the first of many? Was my Junior High experience going to be like one of the teen novels I've read? With a mean girl and her clique that ruins my life?

I tries to push that thought out of my mind as I met Rose by our lockers.

"Hey! What took you so long?"

"Oh I just ran into- someone." I replied.

"Let me guess. It was Lexi Andersen and she freaked out and called you a barbarian?" She asked.

I laughed. "Not the barbarian part, but yeah, she freaked out."

"Oh please, she does that to everyone."

"Really?"

"Yup. The other day I saw her come out of a classroom, looking at her phone. She ran into to girls walking in front of her, dropped her phone, and practically sued them because she thought it was their fault."

"Wow! She's so rude!"

"Yeah, we're all used to it around here." Rose said with a sigh. "You should probably hear my advice for how to survive in this school with all the cliques and people who think they're amazing."

"Really? I could really use advice!" I replied.

"Alright, then." She said. "First rule- Don't pay attention. Not in class or anything, but to anyone that is mean to you. Sometimes they'll walk past you in the hallways with new designer jeans on or something, and totally show off their stuff trying to make you jealous of them. Don't give them the attention they want, cause everyone's found that just makes them meaner.

"Second- don't listen when they boss you around. Lexi has basically tried to control me a bunch of times. She probably thinks I'm her personal slave. I don't know why they think its ok to boss people who aren't as popular as them. But whatever you do, don't listen to them!

"And third- stand up for yourself! Like when they get mad at you for something that was on accident, or you didn't even do! Show em who's boss!"

Rose spoke with such dignity, and passion.

"Wow. So that's all?" I replied.

"Well, not everything. Just.. the peer pressure ones."

We laughed, and walked out to the lunch table together.
