Opals POV

The days leading up to Friday came so much faster than I wanted it to. Each day I worried about it more and more.

I spent a lot of that time outside. Breathing the fresh air and rolling in the soft, green grass helped me feel calm, like everything was gonna be ok.

My parents talked to me about it a lot. They were constantly giving me advice for it like "always stay organized" and "take notes". But really, the only advice I needed right now was how I was gonna fit in, in a place where people weren't like me? I mean, people my age nowadays pay attention to the Internet, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and everything else. I have my own phone, but I never really used it. I mean, I have no friends, so who am I supposed so call and text?

I was so terrified. My whole life, I stayed strong, because, well I had nothing happen to me that really tested my strength. Now, it definitely was.

When Thursday night came, I was so nervous that the whole zoo was set free in my stomach.

I felt like puking.

I kept trying to tell myself that everything would be ok. That I was prepared, and ready for this. But I was totally lying to myself, because I wasn't ready.

Thursday night, at 11:00, I lay flat on my bed staring up at the ceiling. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't fall asleep. I needed some fresh air.

I climbed out of bed, and put on my koala bear slippers, and a jacket. I slowly slipped out the back door, trying not to wake up Mom and Dad.

The sky was black with bright stars tonight. I could hear crickets chirping. I walked in the grass, not really going anywhere, just... walking.

I was sooo nervous! I'd never felt like this before. Before now, I knew that if anything hard came across me I'd face it. But now... I wasn't so sure.

I came up to a tree, and climbed it. I grabbed its thick branches and used them to lift me up, climbing higher and higher till I was sitting on the highest branch. I looked up into the night sky, the beautiful, night sky, wondering who I would be after tomorrow.

*BEEP BEEP BEEP* aaaarrrggggghhhh! That stupid alarm clock! Mom insisted that I got one. I sat up, shut it off, and went back to sleep. But ten I remembered.

School.

Oh no. That sick feeling had come back to me again. And such a shame, I was having a really good dream.

Instead of getting up, I turned around to look at the ceiling. My eyes were wide open. I really felt like I was gonna puke. Hopefully, I was really sick and couldn't go to school. In fact, so sick I caught a horrible disease and would never be able to go to school.

Ya, you wish, Opal. I thought to myself.

I got up, and went into the kitchen to get breakfast. Mom was in there, cooking what smelled like bacon and cinnamon rolls.

"Good morning!" She said cheerfully when she saw me.

I didn't say anything back as I sat down at the table. She set my plate in front of me. She had made orange rolls, which were my favorite breakfast foods of all time. But for once, I felt like I just couldn't eat it.

I nibbled on my food for a while, but eventually just said "Mom, I'm not feeling so good. I don't think I can eat today."

"Ok honey, you're fine. You can finish when you get home."

I got up from the table and went down the hallway to my room. Mom had taken me to the store on Wednesday to pick out an outfit, probably the only good thing happening from this whole disaster .

I had picked out a lavender silk tank top, with a cream shirt cap- sleeved shirt to wear under, with jean shorts, and purple Aztec flats.

I put on the outfit, then started doing my hair. I used my curling wand to curl the tips if my hair, the way I liked it.

I also decided to put on some makeup. Normally, I don't wear makeup, but I thought today might be a good day to do it.

I got ready kinda fast, so I did a double check to make sure I had everything I needed. Notebooks, Paper, pencils, pens, binders, lunch, and phone.

I swung my backpack over my shoulder and walked out the back door, just to see what the morning was like. The sky was a brilliant blue, and birds were chirping. I wanted to spend my day out here, not at school.

"Opal! C'Mon get in the car we need to leave." My mom called.

My heart skipped a beat. I walked to the garage, and climbed into the car.For the next ten minutes, we drove through the country side, and onto the city. I grew more and more nervous the closer we got.

Finally, we drove up to the school. People my age were everywhere, hugging each other, and high-fiving their friends.

"Ok, honey. Good luck." My mom said. She gave me a big hug. "Opal, do something for me."

"What's that mom?"

"No matter what happens, no matter what people do, just always.... Remember who you are."
