To Hate and to Love

Chapter 7

Ellie and her friend Monica cross the street side by side, backpacks swinging behind them. They don't say anything to eachother all the way to the school's football field. They climb the bleachers to sit with the rest of the middle school track team.

Ellie gazes at the sky. It's very gray and gloomy. She shivers slightly and zips up her purple jacket a little higher. Ellie pulls out a snack to eat while waiting for the coach to get here.

Monica suddenly starts giggling for unknown reasons. Ellie looks in the direction she's looking and finds out why. Adam is standing by the trash can, throwing something in it. Ellie annoyed, grunts and looks away.

"You should go say something to him," Monica says.

"That's what everyone says, and no." Ellie replies, with a hint of anger. Monica gets out her own snack, saying nothing more.

Ellie sits silently munching on her snack and staring at the ground. Coach comes a few minutes later. He reminds the kids on the team what their events are then tells them to do warm ups.

Monica and Ellie are the first to stand up. They hop down the bleachers and run on to the track. The only person who's ahead of them is Adam. Ellie feels determined to beat him. She decides to speed up on the last stretch.

As she, Monica, and Adam are nearing the finish Ellie speeds up until she is neck to neck with him. Adam starts racing her back. They're suddenly both sprinting. Adam pulls ahead and beats her. He grins wickedly at her. Ellie scowls and jogs to the football field with Monica.

The boys start making a line at the end of the football field for stretching. The girls make a line behind them. One of their coaches blows a whistle, signaling the boys to start butt kicks. When they get about quarter of the way down the field, they stop and turn around. Then the girls start.

When they're done with that, the track team forms a circle to do some more stretching. A smaller circle of eighth graders sits in the middle to lead the stretching.

A few minutes later, warm ups are finished. Monica and Ellie search for the rest of their relay teammates. The relay they're in together is the two mile relay. It's the first running event in the meet.

Ellie spots Kelsea and starts dragging Monica towards her. Kelsea looks up as she sees them coming. "Okay, now we only have to find Rachel." Monica says.

The three girls look for Rachel. She's always the hardest one to find for whatever reason. They finally find her at the long jump pit. She walks over to them knowing what they want.

Ellie, Rachel, Monica, and Kelsea jog to the 400 meter mark to begin preparing for their relay. Sadly, Adam is on a two mile relay team also. Ellie sits on the grass watching Kelsea and Rachel practice handoffs. Adam is sitting about five yards away from her.

Out of the corner of her eye, she notices her mom and sister coming towards her. Reagan has relentlessly bothered Ellie about Adam since finding out about the whole deal. This will not be a fun track meet.
