Rachael knocked on her boss’s door, “Excuse me, Mr. Dawson?”
Her boss looked up and rolled his eyes, “What is it this time, Rachael?”
She held the article close to her chest as she stepped through the threshold, “I found this article buried beneath some other papers in the file room,” She placed a copy of it down on his desk, “I’d like to take this case.”
He picked up the paper and examined it briefly before crumpling it up and throwing it in the trash can. Rachael’s eyes followed the paper as it landed softly in the bottom. A look of hurt crossed her face.
“That is the most stupid case I’ve ever heard. ‘Vanished into thin air?’” He mocked, “It’s probably just another act to get publicity for themselves. Haven’t you learned that yet, Rach?”
Rachael sighed, “Mr. Dawson, I would never bring you a case that I don’t think is legit.”
He stood up, “You’re one of my best detectives, Rachael. In fact, you’re the head detective. And I don’t think this case is one of the best ones you’ve found and wanted to take on. So, no, I don’t want you taking this case.” He began to put his coat on and turned off his desk lamp, “You should be getting home. We all should.” He walked out the office leaving Rachael in the dark.
She took a few steps forward and felt around to find the lamp switch. She flipped it and looked in the garbage bin, taking the paper ball and unfolding it. She sighed and folded it up, slipping it in her pocket.
She locked the office because she was the last one out and hopped in her car. She drove to the condo she and Kenya shared. While she was driving, all she could hear was the pitter-patter of the rain on her roof. She sighed, the article calling her name. She looked down at the passenger seat, where the note laid beside her iPhone. At a red light, she snatched the article up and read it over, analyzing it once again.
The light turned green and she stepped on the gas pedal, pinning the paper between her hands and the steering wheel.
She pulled into the driveway of the condo and rushed inside, the raindrops soaking her hair. She slammed the door shut behind her to see Kenya waiting for her by the door.
“Well there you are!” She inquired, walking up to Rachael, “How did it go with Shane?”
She shook her head shamefully, “He said it wasn’t up my alley.”
Kenya replies , “Hey look on the bright side, when I figure that out I will let you know!”
“I just...this article...it’s like, calling for me to answer it!” Rachael argued, “And I don’t want to give up on it. It’s so intriguing!”
Kenya took the paper out of her friend’s hands and put it on the small rolltop desk they had by their door, “Well you can work on it tomorrow, tonight we’re going partying!” She exclaimed followed by a slight chuckle.
Rachael looked at her friend in skepticism, “Oh...kay? What do you have behind your back??
Kenya smirked before she pulled out a little red dress from behind her back. Rachael’s eyes widened in surprise. “You’re going to wear this tonight,” Kenya told her, shoving the dress at her.
“I am most definitely not!” Rachael detested, pushing the dress back at her.
“Come on, it’ll look so cute on you…” She retorted, holding up the dress to her friend.
“No,” Rachael swatted the dress away, “I’m not wearing that.”
Kenya pouted, “Okay, forget what you wanna where, put the damn dress on! I already called a cab and we need to be there to meet the group.”
