I landed from out of thin air with a thud. It hurt, but that wasn't my priority. I looked around. 'Shit', Dan was right. I wasn't in bed. Which meant I had to save them. But how?....
'Alright Essy. Think.'I need a distraction. I could hear the panic in my thoughts. Oh come on. I'd watched too many crime movies to not be able to pull this off.
I began quietly shuffling through all the junk around. Rusty poles, cracked glasses, ropes, some rubber, popcorn??? Why couldn't my life just be simple? Just then, my smart kicked in. I tied the rope to a couple of metal poles and walked out of the room, the loose ends in my hand. When I was satisfied I was far enough, I tugged the rope and all the poles fell. That ought to be distraction enough.
Now I could hear voices. Actually, just one, an angry male voice mumbling something unintelligible. But I knew they were more than one by the footsteps. I shuddered as I ran the opposite direction. I quickly rushed under a table to hide. As I held my breath and peeked out, two sets of feet walked past. I gave a few seconds before I headed back the way I came. I had to find Dan and the others. After many doors, rooms, stairs, hallways, I realised an inescapable fact. I was lost. Lost in a silly abandoned factory in the dead of the night. Great.
'The girl is gone. We have to warn him.' I heard them say. This was my chance. I followed at a safe distance as I was led to where I wanted. Or at least I hoped that's where they were going. They turned some corners and made their way into a room I identified as an admin office of some sorts.
'She is gone. '
'Hmm... Well played Daniel. Hide this' a third voice said. 'If he's not with us, we don't need him gaining the upper hand.'
They placed a scroll into a small gap in the wall behind the cabinet.
I hid behind another table and smiled. ~I think I'm getting the hang of this~ I thought just before I knocked over a glass cup. The sound of shattering glass became the loudest thing noise a person city could make. The rats scurried away from the noise.
'Rats', he spat disgustedly as be continued moving. Phew. Close one. They pulled up at an empty room and lifted up a part of the floor board. Dan wasn't in the factory. He was under it.I approached with caution. I heard what sounded like an exchange of fists, then some indiscernible voices. I moved closer and closer till I could see and hear clearly. Dan was on the floor, blood on his face, same as Phil and Isabel, but worse.
'Your friend escaped. You, I'm afraid, wouldn't be so lucky. Join us or perish. '
'Go to hell Phil spat. '
'Oh definitely, but you'll get there first.' He drew a sword and lunged at Phil, and then Isabel happened.
