*Author's Note*

So... Marshall actually doesn't pop up in this chapter. And unless you ship her with Brendan, there's absolutely no Fluff here. Think of it as... a break from the previous chapter.

*Fionna's POV*

A few days later, I was walking slowly through the Candy Kingdom. I hadn't been back since... you know. I didn't like to think about it. Prince Gumball came bounding over to me with this gigantic grin on his face. "Fionna!"
I looked at him slowly. "Hey, PG."
"What's up?" He asked me, concerned. "Is this because of Marshall Lee?"

I shook my head. "It's because of the Lich. I don't feel right taking a life, no matter how evil she was."
"But you did everyone a favor. She was evil." Gumball said, confused.
"You wouldn't understand." I sighed.
He looked at me for a minute, before nodding slowly. "Anyway, you need to go see the Ice Queen. You can handle her on your own, right?"

"I think so. What about Cake?"
"I sent her over to the Fire Kingdom. I need some fire from a Flame Person, and ice from the Ice Queen. I'm going to try to seperate their genetic mutations from the actual elements-"
"Gumball, you just want me to get some ice, right? From the Ice Queen? Okay, then you don't have to explain every tiny scientific detail that you know I won't understand."
He shrugged.

"And thanks for not making a big deal out of the... yeah." I said, looking at my shoes.
"No problem. All in a day's work for you, right?" He asked.
My head snapped up, and I glared at him, shaking my head. "No. Look... I'm just going to go get your ice now, okay?"
"O-okay." He stuttered out, taken aback by my sudden and angry response for some reason. I don't know why- I explained my feelings about it to him already, even if he didn't understand.

It obviously took me a while longer to get there than it would have taken with Cake or Marshall, and the sun was pretty low by the time I got there, but not quite sunset yet.
The Ice Queen noticed me right away. "What do you want?"
"Um.... this is going to sound really weird, but can you please shoot some ice at me?

"Why? So you can take me down like the Lich Queen with perfect validation?" She snapped.
"No. No... I never wanted to kill her in the first place, and I certainly don't want to kill you. In fact... thank you for sending me into those fairytales."
"If you're not trying to kill me, why do you want me to attack you?" The Ice Queen asked like I was an idiot.

"I don't want you to attack me. Gumball just wants some of your ice for some sciency thing."
"You'd think he would have saved some from one of the many times I attacked him. So you liked the fairytales. Once again, he was your handsome prince, wasn't he?"
"No, actually. He barely ever showed up, and I realized that I loved Marshall, not him. Anyway, can you just give me some ice without freezing any part of my body?"

She shot me a look. "If you hurt him in the end, you won't live to regret it. Depending on what happens, I might give you a quick death in your sleep, or hypothermia."
"I don't want to hurt him. And why do you care?"
"I-I don't know... for some reason... I feel protective of him, like a mother..."

"Okay. Well, I really don't want to hurt him. Look, I don't know how Marshall and I will end up, but right now, I don't know what I would do without him. And he's also the only one who really understands how I feel at the moment. Look, I'll leave you alone again until someone causes trouble. I just need some ice."

She nodded after a minute, and shot some ice at the floor, forming a large chunk that I chipped off with my sword and crammed into my backpack. I thanked her, and left. The sun was already almost completely gone, and it was (do I really have to say it? Really?)... ugh, twilight, if that's what you want to call it.

I hadn't realized it was so late when I set out for the Candy Kingdom. I was in the middle of the grasslands when I felt like someone was watching me. I turned, but there was no one there. Maybe I'm just getting paranoid about Brendan... but just as I took another step, I felt someone right behind me, pressing a cloth to my nose and holding my arms behind my back. I struggled and tried to hold my breath, but I had to take a breath in the end.

A sweet, cloying scent filled my nose, and I felt dizzy, before collapsing. The last thing I saw was whoever was behind me step in front of me, and smirk, his eyes glowing red. Damn it, Brendan!
