1) Fionna didn't save Marshall in time.
Jazz sighed. "I feel like the princess from Tangled. I just want to get out there!"
"Well, you can't." Annie replied, brushing her hair. "You're the Crown Princess, and the only heir to the throne, especially since your mother won't remarry."
Jazz nodded. "I know. I just... I want to get out of here, already! I'm sick of being treated like I'm going to break at any minute!"
"Your father wanted to get out of here too..."
"Annie?"
"Hmm?"
"Can vampires become ghosts?"
"I don't think so..."
"Oh. Okay."
Annie stepped back. "There. Your hair is finally done-- don't mess it up, or I will kill you."
Jazz didn't doubt it. Tonight was somewhat important, with her official introduction to the kingdom before she took over from her mother the next month. She didn't want to do it. Any of it. The ball, where bachelors would inevitably be shoved at her, the wearing of the dress... she had been trained as a warrior, goddammit! Not a princess, though her grandmother had persisted up until her eighteenth birthday.
Finally, Annie brought her downstairs. The ballroom of the castle ("We have a ballroom?" ) was filled with people who were talking and dancing. She even saw her mother, all dressed up too. She didn't look as miserable as Jazz felt, but Jazz was certain she was mad about the dress too.
"Don't mess this up." Annie warned, before flitting over to Fionna.
Fionna turned and saw Jazz, then smiled. "Come over here."
Uncharacteristically shy, Jazz walked over.
"She's the spitting image of your late husband." The man Fionna had been talking to gasped.
Fionna's mouth became a thin line. Jazz knew she still didn't like to talk about him, that she even sort of blamed herself for his death.
Any other information had been gleaned from years and years of begging Annie.
"Your Majesty... have you heard of the King's Vigil?" The man continued tentatively.
"No. And there hasn't been a king for nearly twenty years, as I'm sure you remember." Fionna replied in clipped tones.
"Well... the King's Vigil is the legend that on a certain night of the year, the previous kings, at least, all the dead ones... return to this world for one night of the year."
Fionna stiffened. "That's nonsense."
"I assure you, Your Majesty, that it's not. I myself saw King Tobias when I was in the castle many years ago."
"What night?" Jazz asked.
"I think it was... tonight... actually." The man said.
"Don't... Jazz, I think he's just telling a story. There's no way only one person would have seen... that he wouldn't have..."
"Your Majesty, I've upset you!"
"Well, no sh(bleep)." Jazz said.
"Jazz, not in front of the guests." Fionna said.
"Well, it's true!"
Fionna pulled Jazz to the side. "Listen... I need to tell you something, and I need you to hear it from me. You know how relations are really bad with Kirschland? Yeah. And remember that I had no part in this, the Parliament your father set up decided--"
She was cut off by the Ambassador of Kirschland somehow quieting the crowd, and saying, "Thank you all for coming here tonight. This evening, we're not only celebrating the princess' imminent coronation, but we're also celebrating her engagement to Prince Kaiter."
"I'm so sorry, Jazz." Fionna said, trying to hug her daughter before Jazz turned and ran out of the room. She wouldn't do it. They couldn't make her. Kaiter was known to be cruel and ruthless, and frankly, he creeped her out. Maybe even scared her. And they didn't even ask. Well, screw them! She wouldn't let Kaiter have her.
She hurriedly cleaned off the little make-up she had allowed Annie to put on her, undid her hair, changed clothes and packed some more, before hiding her hair in a hat and sneaking out. The quickest way out would be through the Hall of Kings, since no one would be in there. The hall had portraits of every king (or just plain head of state) since the very first.
