"Rin. Do you not admire my gift?" Sesshomaru said in a tired voice. It wasn't that I didn't like them; I suppose, once I did like them.
I flashed him the best smile I could muster. "I am very honored to receive such gifts, Sesshomaru-sama." Even as I said it, I had left the carefully wrapped package unopened, in a forgettable corner of the room. Of course, he noticed this, but I knew he'd say nothing of it. It was probably another kimono.
Jaken scoffed outside the house, not willing to go far when Sesshomaru had commanded him away. Kaede also gave us this time alone, and I felt oddly vulnerable here with him. It wasn't always this way. I craved his presence near me, wanted him to always be looking at me. How did my childhood safeguard become so strange in time? The only way to figure that out is to look back.
"I win, Jaken-sama!" He didn't seem pleased; I suppose I should have at least told him we were racing.
His eyes narrowed as he caught his breath, "Fool! This is not a race!"
I looked down at my friend, a yokai, but he wasn't scary. Sesshomaru wasn't scary either, and he looked so human. And yet, I wondered looking over to the tall, fair skinned man, he did almost look god-like.
I stopped suddenly, causing Jaken to crash into me. "Rin don't stop so--" He noticed it too, the oni that was dead before us. It's head was the size of me.
I walked up to it cautiously, not really knowing the boundaries of fear since being revived by Sesshomaru. "Sesshomaru-sama was right. It's dead."
"Of course he was right!" He looked from the oni to Sesshomaru, "..But how?"
"Inuyasha killed it." His voice was distant, as if he wasn't even talking with us. He was this way a lot of the time.
Jaken scoffed. "As if that half-yokai could possibly--"
"Inuyasha killed it." He repeated, picking up the head. It was so gross I couldn't help but scream.
"Kya, kya!" I wasn't scared. I know now, there were lots of things I should have been scared of, but I wasn't. I'm sure that had a lot to do with my new company, three yokai. A-Un being the third, the two-headed dragon I often rode.
"Let us go." He commanded. "Rin, stop making so much noise."
I stood at attention. "Yes, Sesshomaru-sama." Jaken gave me a weary glance. I think he was upset that he did not have such power over me.
We were always moving, and he was always so silent. Maybe it was why I yearned so much for his attention. Jaken talked to me, and I really liked him despite the fact that he was constantly annoyed by me. Personally, I think he was just putting up a front.
When I get tired of the constant walking, I sit on A-Un who is carefully guided by the hands of my lord. I liked to watch his white hair swish in the wind; I liked to wonder.
We stopped in some desolate place. The way he wouldn't look at me right away, I knew he was going to tell me to stay away. "Rin, stay here." I knew it.
I didn't want to be left alone. "No. I am coming with you!" I demanded. It was the first time he had left me alone, so I had more nerve.
