After a long, boring, extended walk, we finally make it to the wire fence.
"Climb under." I tell them.
"But isn't it on?" Rush questions.
"No, it's turned off after 6." I say.
"How do you know that!"
"Let's say, I've studied this fence a lot."
We all laugh and climb under the fence. I'm the last to go under. I wriggle myself past the open wire, and come out on the other side. I draw out my knife just incase of an emergency.
"Let's go home." I smile.
The sky is dark now, stars twinkling above us. It's a clear night, a beautiful night. It's the most perfect night I've seen in a while. But with perfection comes danger.
We run though the woods, the grass flying beneath our feet. I hear a crunch and turn around. In the glow of the moon, I see two pair of eyes meet mine. But, it's deer eyes luckily. I let it be because I'll come across it tomorrow. I catch up to the others, that are far ahead of me.
"What was that about?" Rush asks.
"Nothing actually. It was just a deer." I say.
"Oh." He says, "Be careful out there."
"I always am, don't worry about me." I laugh.
The smell of burning wood greets my nose like an old friend.
"Come on, we're close." I say.
About a few feet after, I see the glow of the house lights. Mom's home. Great.
We walk though the woods about 5 minutes longer before we come to the house. I climb up the porch stairs that creak beneath my feet, and up . I open it and the bell rings a happy tune. We all slip inside and manage to sit on the couch before Mom walks in.
"Where have you been! I was worried sick!" She says as she pulls off her oven mitts and sets them on the table.
She runs over to me and hugs me tight. Then Hazel and Jax.
"Sorry Mom, we got caught up in the woods." I lie.
"Oh. Well you be careful out there." She warns.
She moves her eyes over to Rush. Her face twist with shock and surprise. She shifts her eyes from Rush to the remote flashing in his hand.
"What is that?" She screeches.
"Nothing." Rush says as he sets it behind him.
"Rush Alexander!" She yells, "I know when your hiding something."
"Wait. How do you know me?" He asks, confused obviously.
"I was friends with your mother and father." She replies, "Jax and Hazel, go to your room please."
They jump up off their seats and climb the stairs to their rooms.
"Now. Why were you in the city?" She asks me when Jax and Hazel have left.
"I wasn't." I lie again.
"I'm not stupid April." She says, "You won't get in trouble, but I must warn you about something."
"Ok. Fine, we were in the city." I say.
"Now, Rush, give me that remote." She tells him.
Rush places the remote into her hand, and she snatches it away.
"April, I must tell you something I should have told you years ago. But now, that I didn't tell you, your life could be in danger. I'm sorry. But you are going to need to know this to even try and survive." She explains.
