I wake up screaming. My face is soaked with tears, and my arms are clawed. I pull the blanket off of me, and scramble up to the top of my bed, hugging my knees. I rest my head between my knees and try to calm down. The door opens slightly, and I hear footsteps walk into the room.
I look up, and quickly dry my tears.
"April?" I hear Rush say, his face barely noticeable in the low glow of the small lamp.
He crosses the room and sits at the bottom of my bed.
"Are you ok?" He asks.
I shake my head no. I'm not ok. I fight back tears for the second time today, and it hurts to even blink.
"Nightmare?" He says.
"Yeah." I say.
We sit in silence, his face trained on me, twisted in concern. I steady my breathing, and the pictures stop flashing before my eyes.
"You know I get them too." He says a moves his hair away from his face.
"You do?" I say.
"Yeah. Mostly everyone here does." He says.
"I think I'll be ok now." I say and sit normal.
"Ok, I'm across the hall if you need me." He says and leaves the room.

Over the next few weeks, we are trained to fight, to use weapons, and survival skills. Although I already know these, I do the training anyway, for the fact that I could get better. The nightmares finally leave me be, and every now and then they will fight there way into my dreams. Seeing people hurt doesn't faze me as much anymore, due to the fact that that's me as well. I help teach the survival training, and plenty of people look up to me. I am much braver, and I can handle a great deal of pain. I hardly shed any tears the entire time. Callie went home, she said it hurt her too much to see others in pain. I hope to see her one day soon.
"Well done April. You have survived the first test." I whisper.
Tomorrow is the day we will go out into the city, and who knows what waits for us in the luminous City Lights.
