"Pretty, right?" Kate stands by the door, showing the full view of their room to Rue.
"You'd better not mess up this room or I'll kill you." She says while ushering Rue to come inside as she closes the door behind them and sits on her bed.
"Then you're definitely going to jail as I'm the messy type." Rue shows Kate her tongue as Kate sighs.
She is definitely warming up towards Kate.
"Why do I always have to have a messy roommate? " Kate frowns.
Rue smiles and ignores Kate's last comment. The room is indeed decorated beautifully, with glow-in-the-dark stickers over the baby blue coloured wall, the floor covered with carpets, two cupboards, two beds with the same bedsheet, and two office tables set with lamps, one for Kate and the other for her. Towards the end of the room is a window, with red curtains overlooking a park with a lake, and by the side, another door that leads to the bathroom. There is even a shower curtain and a bathtub in it.
Rue is surprised. She had not thought that a simple college room would be so luxurious, almost as if it was a hotel room. She is really glad for it.
"So... this is what you meant when you said I'm lucky to have a nice room and a nice roommate? " Rue inquires in awe.
"No. I'll tell you a secret. I bribed the school authorities to have permission to renovate this room how I like it. It's the coolest room in the whole college. " Kate looks proud of herself while saying that. "Or else, you wouldn't have the office table, or the bathtub and these carpets, frankly, mostly everything here is mine."
Rue freezes. Man, Kate is rich, for goodness sake. Why did she even choose to stay here instead of staying in a 5-star hotel instead?
"How did I become your roommate? Don't you have any best friends to share this with? And... what happens when you graduate?" Rue can't stop the stream of questions coming out from her mouth.
"I picked you out of the students' name list, idiot. Your name looked nice so I decided to take you, lucky one. And when we graduate, the future students that have the best results can stay here. I'm fine with it." Kate grins looking at Rue's face, ignoring her second question.
"Oh. Thank you." Is all Rue can say. She remembers something and asks, "And your best friend?"
"You had to ask." Kate looks down at her feet. "She committed suicide a few months ago and left me all alone."
Rue is silent. 'And here I am, thinking everything is going on well. The mood is ruined. I shouldn't have asked that twice when it was obvious that she was purposely ignoring the question.' She thought.
Rue crosses over the room to Kate in a few steps and hugs her suddenly.
"I'm sorry, so sorry for your loss. "
It is her first time hugging anyone other than her mother but she feels that Kate needs it.
"Don't ever ask me about this anymore. It's okay. The past is past and gone." Kate returns Rue's hug but her cheery look earlier is gone.
"Okay." Rue says and Kate helps her to unpack.
"Can we be best friends from now?" Rue asks Kate after a period of silence. "Look, I'm new here and I need a friend, and I think you need one too. Let's take care of each other."
"We'll see." says Kate.
Silence falls.
"Oh come on I'm just kidding. I mean sure! Why not?" Kate thumps Rue's shoulder suddenly and laughs, startling her.
Rue jumps a little and smiles. "Okay." she says.
"Why are you so serious?" asks Kate.
"You don't know why?" replies Rue with another question.
"I guess it's because your name is Sirius Black!" Kate jests.
"Oh my God... I thought no one I meet will ever be in the Harry Potter fandom!!" Rue laughs.
"So did I, until I saw your books and know that you're a bookworm." Kate smiles. "I'm a "movieworm" though."
They both laughed.
That was the dawn of a new friendship.
