7. Abort Mission?

CHAOL: Abort Mission. Mission failed. She has a boyfriend.

His phone buzzes while he was talking to Kate.

'What happened now? Chaol messed up again, geez.' James quickly typed a message back.

JAMES: What? Be there in two minutes. Wait for me.

"What happened? You look flustered." Kate inquires.

"I'm sorry Kate, I need to go. Right now." James replied.

"What? You've been here only for a while and you haven't finished your food!" Kate frowns.

"I'm sorry, okay? I got to go." He raises his voice suddenly, startling Kate.

"James, how dare you? First Rue is nowhere to be found, now you! Don't you dare go anywhere!" Kate recovers from her shock and shouts at him.

"Oh wow, James just dumped Kate!" Some girls snigger behind them at the same time.

'Two minutes. Chaol can be anywhere now.'

"Shut up!" He says to them. "Kate I'm sorry."

James turns around and hurries towards the library, leaving the commotion behind.

'God, I just angered her.'

'What now?'

'Hope nothing happens. I'll ask her to forgive me later.'

He arrives at the library frustrated at what he just did, but he convinces himself that his best friend is more important. Kate could wait. She never liked him anyway. He knows he was friendzoned, even if she didn't ever say so.

He can't see Chaol anywhere outside the library. He reaches for the door just as it opens and a brown-haired girl bumps him in the chest with her head.

'Stupid attempts at flirting. Hell!' James thought as he dashes to the side, letting the girl fall on the floor. 'Serves her right.'

A second before she falls though, he picked her up with his arms. "Don't flirt with me ever again!" He mean to say but what comes out is "Don't-", as he realize that the girl was none other than her.

"Rue?" He asks. "Did Chaol successfully see you?" James blurts out before thinking.

"W-what?" Rue replies and he notices that she is still in his arms.

He is in the process of releasing her when Laurent came.

"Rue, are you okay?" Laurent drawls in that awful way of his. "Oh, of course you are, in the arms of Prince Charming, I see."

At that, Rue blushes and stands up. James is furious. He wants to slap Laurent right there but he kept calm.

"See you soon, Princess with blue eyes." Laurent pretends that he cannot see James standing there and walks away.

James could see Rue blushing. He suddenly realizes what Chaol meant by her having a boyfriend. But according to what James heard, he knows that Laurent is definitely not her boyfriend, yet.

'That doesn't mean Laurent wouldn't have her. As usual, she is already enchanted. Maybe Chaol is a bit late, but he still has his chances.'

"Did you mean that Chaol was the one who sent me those messages and asked me to meet him?" Rue is nudging James' back now.

He turns around. "No, yes, no... I mean, yes." He couldn't lie to her, not if he wants Chaol to have a chance.

"What? So he was the one who caused my phone to be taken! And yet he didn't even apologise! He just passed by us and walked out of the library." She grits her teeth.

'Us? She and Laurent became an item?'

James keeps silent. She seems really mad at Chaol.

"James..."

He looks at Rue, surprised to see that there are tears welling in her eyes.

"James my day totally sucks today. Why did Chaol walk away without asking me to even talk?" Rue says, wiping her tears away when she notices that he saw them.

He hugs her.

He did not plan on hugging her and she seems a little startled but she let him do so, and so he does not let go.

"I don't know, Rue."

"How could you not know? You're his best friend." She speaks with a muffled voice.

'Yeah, why? I don't know anymore.'

He lets her go even though he feels an urge to protect her.

It is because of Chaol that she feels hurt.

Because of Chaol.

'Chaol, I think she truly likes you too.'
