A week had passed. I dressed Deon in a dark blue Spider-Man onesie and put white socks on his feet. I carried him on my hip out to the car. I didn't bother telling Devin where I was going. He was asleep anyway. He was acting like a child ever since the incident at the hospital. He always had this hard look on his face like he was ready to fuck some shit up at any minute. I strapped Deon into his car seat and got into the driver's seat. I adjusted my mirror so that I could see him and began to pull out.

"Are you excited to see Daddy?" I asked him.

He just kept biting down on his teething toy. I was excited to see Chresanto again. Partly because I had Deon with me and no Devin so this visit should only be all about unity, not drama. But on the other hand, I did want to know what had him so pissed at Devin the last time I visited. It was unfortunate that he couldn't speak last time and therefore couldn't tell me what was up but today when I called the doctor to get an update, she said he's healing well and he can talk now but it sounds scratchy which was fine by me. I'd take what I could get. I walked into the hospital, signed in, and went up to Chresanto's room. There was a different police officer outside this time but he still had to search me. I walked in and saw Chresanto sitting up in his bed pushing his breakfast around with his fork.

"I'm sure it's better than the jail food" I said making him look at me. "You might wanna eat up as much as you can here before you have to go back to slop"

He smiled at me and I smiled back but I knew it was Deon that had him in high spirits. Chresanto looked a lot better. His lips were back to their regular plumpness more or less and the bruises on his arms and neck were less prominent.

"Lemme see him" he said pushing the table away and holding his arms out.

The doctor was right, his voice did sound bad. If it hurt, he didn't show it though. I walked over and put Deon in his hands. Instantly, he lifted him up and kissed his face earning a giggle from Deon.

"I missed you, man!" he beamed.

Then he looked at me.

"Thank you" he said genuinely.

"Don't thank me. He's your son too. How you doing, babe?"

"Better. My main thing was being able to talk again. Now I just need to get enough strength to go to the bathroom on my own" he said rolling his eyes.

I knew Chresanto hated being babied but he was pretty banged up. It was his only option really.

"I hear you" I said.

"How are you doing?" he asked readjusting Deon in his arms as he tended to squirm a lot.

"Fine. Everyone's doing fine...well, almost everyone" I said hoping to lead him into a conversation regarding Devin and what he did.

He put his finger in Deon's palm and Deon grabbed a hold of it.

"I want him out of the house. On everything, that nigga is dead to me"

I wanted to tell him to watch his mouth in front of Deon but I could see that he was pissed so I let him express it however.

"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. What was that last week?"

"He's the one who sent them niggas to jump me. I want him out of the house and away from my family. I swear when I get out of prison, the first thing I'm doing is-"

"Wait, Chres, he what?!" I asked appalled.

Devin would never...would he?

"How do you know?"
