I was feeding Deon while Miss Mabel cooked dinner for us, the lovely smell of gumbo filling up the room. My phone began to ring all of a sudden.
"Hold on, sweetie" I said getting up to get my phone off of the counter.
"Hello?" I said accepting the call.
"You are receiving a collect call from the Dade County Correctional Institution. Inmate...Devin Wilks... is trying to reach you. Do you accept the charges?"
My heart sunk. At first I thought the inmate was Chresanto but Devin's in there now? Either he did something stupid last night or Lisa didn't waste time turning in the evidence she manipulated. Either way, it wasn't my business. He and I were done as I made clear last night. I wanted nothing to do with him anymore. Plus, I knew that phone calls in prison are recorded so if he decided to mention anything about us or our affair or us setting him up, that call could give him the upper hand in this case. I'll be damned if I let that happen. I decided to hang up the phone. I set my phone back down and went back to feeding Deon. I could hear the phone vibrating over and over and over.
"Bahja, ain't you gonna get that? Sounds like somebody really tryna reach you" Mabel said looking away from her pot at me.
I shook my head.
"It's unimportant"
"What's going on?" she asked turning her full attention on me now.
"Nothing, Miss Mabel. Just drop it"
She shrugged.
"Okay. How was your visit yesterday?"
"It was fine. He's doing a lot better" I said relieved that the vibrating had finally stopped.
"That's good to hear. I was gonna go-"
My phone began to vibrate again. I huffed and turned around to see Lisa's name on my phone. Miss Mabel looked irritated at this point.
"Girl, please pick up that damn phone before I throw it somewhere"
I chuckled and picked up the phone.
"Hey" I said into the phone.
"Good afternoon. I've got good news!" she beamed on the other line.
"Devin's locked up" I finished for her.
"Yes, ma'am...how'd you know?"
"He's been blowing up my phone for the past five minutes" I said rolling my eyes at the thought of him.
"You didn't answer, right? Because you know those phone calls are recorded"
"No, I figured they would be"
"Good because I don't need anything popping up to jeopardize this case. We're almost to the finish line. Anyway, that's not all of the good news I have"
"What do you mean? What's up?"
"The judge bought the evidence as you may have guessed and not only is the case going to trial but Chresanto gets to come home"
My heart began to thump. Did I just hear right?
"H-He gets to come h-home? Like today?"
"Yes, ma'am. I'm currently on my way to come pick him up. Now it isn't set in stone whether or not he can stay there officially but he will be until the trial. Therefore, I'll need you to make sure that he is there and on time"
"Absolutely" I beamed.
"You have to be there too"
"Me? You want me to testify again?"
