The sounds of flickering fire filled the ears of a twelve year-old girl as she hugged her mother closer. Tears streamed down her face as people dressed in black beat up her father.
"Stop it! Stop it!" The girl's mother cried. "Please! He hasn't done anything wrong!"
The mysterious men stopped and looked at the woman and the girl huddled in a corner.
The woman has shoulder length blond hair and blue eyes. She was covered in scars and ash. Her yellow blouse and jeans were now ripped.
The girl has long wavy blond hair and green eyes. She was covered in ash and scars as well. And her green jacket, yellow shirt and jeans were also ripped.
"Leave my father alone!" The girl cried in between sobs.
The mysterious men approached the two. The girl can tell they were grinning from under their masks.
"Leave them alone."
The men turned around and saw the girl's father trying to stand. He was full of bruises and scars and he was covered in ash as well.
"Leave my family out of this," he said firmly. "I'm the one you're after, take me but leave my family alone."
"We're not only after you," the tallest of the men said. "We're after your family, as well as your friends. Your elemental powers will be useful to us."
"You liars! Mom and Dad doesn't have powers!" The girl shouted.
The tall man chuckled. "There are things your parents never told you." He said. "Grab them!"
The other men grabbed the woman and the girl while others grabbed the girl's father.
The woman tried to break free from the man's grasp but failed. The men holding them threw three of them to the ground while some of the men searched the house for something. The woman hugged her husband.
"Are you alright?" She asked.
"Don't worry about me," the man whispered. "I'm just glad you're both safe."
"Dad," the girl started. "We're gonna escape from them, aren't we?"
The woman and the man looked at each other with worried expressions. The man nodded weakly at the woman and she nodded back.
The woman placed both hands on the girl's shoulders. "Leyla, listen carefully," she whispered. "We can't all escape. We'll distract them, so you'll have to make a run for it. There's a reason why we chose to live near the Birchwood Forest."
"But.. but what about you?" Leyla asked, tears starting to fill her eyes.
"We'll be fine." Her father reassured her. "When you escape, go to the Birchwood Forest. There you will meet someone who will take care of you. No matter what happens, Leyla, you must not come back here."
Leyla nodded and hugged her father and mother. The rest of the men came back.
"No sign of it, sir." One man said.
"Perhaps it's with his friends." Another man said.
The tall man rubbed his chin. "They must've hidden it somewhere." He said. "Grab the prisoners and let's go." The men grabbed the three and began dragging them away.
"Leyla, do you still remember how to use a sword?" The girl's father whispered.
"Yes. Why?"
"Now's the time to use it."
Leyla's father and mother suddenly kicked away the men holding them. The other men pulled out their guns. The woman held up a hand and vines swiped the guns from them.
Leyla's father grabbed a sword from under a table and tossed it to her. She unsheathed the sword and started fighting. She knew her parents can fight, but she never knew her parents have powers. Elemental powers.
"Leyla, run!" Leyla heard her father call.
Two glowing green orbs appeared on his fists, so Leyla closed her eyes. The orbs glowed brighter and brighter until it blinded the men.
Leyla took this chance to make a run for it. She put the sword back in its sheath and ran out of the door and into the forest. She climbed a tree and waited.
After a while of silence, she heard a scream. Her heart started beating fast as the men walked out of the burned down house, dragging with them her unconscious father and mother.
"Tie 'em up and bring them back to base." The tall man ordered. "We must continue to search for the whereabouts of the other elemental ninjas."
"But, sir, what about the girl?" Asked one man.
"Forget her. She's not worth it." The tall man growled. "That little girl doesn't even know of her elemental powers."
After a while, Leyla finally turned to leave. She jumped from branch to branch until she came to the other end of the forest. She jumped to the ground and began to run until she reached the Birchwood Forest.
She knew how dangerous it is. Treehorns were very dangerous for they blend in with the snow and trees. Leyla continued to walk anyway. She already felt cold and wanted to curl into a ball.
A distant roar made her stop in her tracks and draw her sword. She looked around her carefully, not wanting to come across any Treehorns. A snap of a twig made her turn around quickly, her eyes closed and sword drawn.
Clang!
Leyla opened her eyes and saw a tall girl with silver hair and skin and blue eyes. She was wearing a light blue t-shirt under a brown leather jacket, pants and leather boots. She was blocking Leyla's sword with her own.
"Easy there, miss." She said calmly. "There is no need for violence."
Leyla put her sword away and apologized. Seeing how this girl was dressed, Leyla guessed she was hunting or something.
"May I ask why you are here?" The girl asked, also putting the sword away and walking away, with Leyla close behind.
"Well, it's a long story." Leyla replied. "I'm Leyla."
"Crystal."
"Huh?" Leyla asked, confused.
The girl chuckled. "My name is Crystal." She smiled.
