Chapter 18 - Everything Will Just Melt Away

The next day, we were all in my back garden...celebrating. Frank decided about two hours ago to have an unannounced barbeque in honour of our freedom. Or in Frank's words this barbeque is the 'path of righteousness' for us. He's been on a high all night - he ate a LOT of skittles yesterday!

I'm surprised people showed up to be honest. We were on our way to being disowned by our friends last night for not telling them the news about Cody and Melanie straight away. I can see why they were a bit pissed off, but Frank didn't help anything by prolonging the announcement. But his post-toilet outburst definitely helped the whole situation, which is a sentence I never thought I'd say.

It confused them more than anything, but when Frank finally made the announcement, in words we could actually understand, everyone was just happy.

We're all here to celebrate though. That's what I'm more happy about.

An arm wrapped around my shoulder, bringing me out of my thoughts.

"Hey T," Frank said, "This is one amazing barbeque, don't you think?"

"Uhh..."

"I think this will be the king of all barbeques, the barbeque everyone aims to have when they have a barbeque." Frank said. I think his brain has lost all connection with his mouth.

"How many times did you just say barbeque?" I asked him.

"I don't know...like fifty?" he guessed, "Oh hey Mikey!" Frank said, turning to give Mikey an awkward hug.

"Hi Frank," he laughed, returning the hug.

"I am going to be the king of all barbeques!" Frank announced to everyone in the garden.

"Hey Mr King!" Ray called over, "You need to barbeque the food before you can earn the addition of 'of all barbeques' to your royal title."

"Oh crap, thanks Ray!" Frank said, rushing over to the grill, making us all laugh.

"That boy is mad." Mikey observed.

I turned to him. "You've only just noticed that? Where have you been all this time?"

"I've been a little preoccupied with a different goofball," he smiled, stepping closer to me.

"And I've just realised you've smiled so much since yesterday, which means you've brought a lot of happiness to the unicorn race. They'll probably name you mother of all the unicorns."

At that Mikey burst out laughing, "You can tell you and Frank are related."

"Yeah, but you love me." I said innocently.

"Yeah I do."

My mouth dropped open. I looked at Mikey, who's face was what I imagine was the exact picture of mine.

"Did you just...?" I stammered, at a complete loss for words.

"I think I did." Mikey said, looking equally shocked.

Mikey's expression suddenly went from totally shocked and confused to...soft?

He took my hands, "Okay, I don't know what to think right now. That thought has never crossed my mind before." Mikey said.

"Wow..." I said.

"But here is what I have thought about," he said.

Where's he going with this?

"I've thought about how much fun I have when I'm with you, and I think about how much I look forward to seeing you everyday, even if it's just school. Speaking of, I'm always thinking about the way you're so concentrated in Creative Writing, you'll be so focused on your writing and hearing that two hundred word piece from the point of view of someone lovesick was beautiful. Obvious, but it was beautiful still - so are you. I think about how strong willed you are, how you stand up for your friends no matter who's watching. And I know how bad I feel for you when you're upset. The last few weeks when Cody has just pissed you off we're torture. All I kept thinking about was how I never know what I could possibly say to comfort you. I really just wanted you to be happy without all the complications. I love it when you're happy, you're so full of life and extremely creative when it comes to coming up with conversation starters and just your random outbursts. They're funny combined with sweet, most of the time. And never tell your brother I said this, but you're also so gorgeous that it's hard to look away sometimes. And you're blushing like crazy right now. I bet you haven't even noticed. I love that you can get so lost in your head sometimes; it'd be great to know what's in there that's so powerful that it makes you forget reality. It's incredible, no, you're incredible." Mikey told me. I don't think he remembered to breathe at any point during that.

"Breathe." I said, now completely aware of how much I'm blushing.

"So yes, I think I do love you."

He just told me he loves me! He just told me he loves me! For God's sake! Get out of your head and answer him.

"I think I do love you too."

"Thank God I didn't just make a complete idiot of myself." Mikey smiled, putting his hand on the side of my face, the pad of his thumb stroking my cheek.

"There's no way you could make a complete idiot of yourself." I grinned, putting emphasis on 'complete'.

Mikey bent down and kissed me. Call me crazy, but it felt so much different than any other kiss I've had with Mikey. The spark I usually feel from kissing was so much stronger than ever. It feels more like fire than a spark. It made my insides melt.

We pulled away breathless.

"Maybe Frank is right," Mikey said, "This is the best barbeque ever."

"Thank you!" Frank yelled from across the garden.

I laughed, "Maybe it is."
