Chapter 19 - Higher and Higher
Frank hadn't been wrong about it being a good barbecue, neither had Mikey. Ah, Mikey. I feel extremely girlie right now but I don't want to stop gushing! He said those three words! I. Love. You. Those words actually came out of his mouth! And Melanie and Cody are gone! This is a great day!
But, I do think that Char likes stalking me, in a best friend ‘I love you and I’m always here’ kind of way. Not even five minutes after Mikey and I had pulled away from our kiss, she’d pulled me away wanting to know everything. I told her those six words that every best friend wants to hear come out of her best friend’s mouth: “He told me he loves me.”
And this is where I am now. After telling her this, Char promptly started doing her happy dance in the middle of my garden, while gushing at the same time. I didn’t know how she made it possible to do that, but it was definitely such an amusing sight.
“Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!” she squealed.
“Ssshhhh! Calm down would you?” I said, knowing my efforts to make her shut up were futile. Once she gets going, she never stops.
“I can’t believe he said that to you!” she whispered excitedly, when she’d realised she was drawing the attention of the band, who were the only other people in the garden. “I need details!!!”
“I’ll tell you later!”
She stopped her dance. “Wait, this was the first time wasn’t it?”
“You’re lack of faith in me is amazing.” I commented, not really sure how to respond to that.
Well, I suppose I could have just answered like a normal person… Wait, no. That could never happen. I’m just not normal, I thought.
“Yes it’s the first time.” I told her. “Why would you think he’s said it before?”
“You just looked really cosy, and…and…” she hesitated, “You didn’t tell me when you first went out.”
“Char…” I sighed, “I thought I explained that…”
“You did,” she said, suddenly becoming happier again, “It was just a random moment of weakness there.”
“Okayyy….”
“Sorry,” she said, giving me a bear hug.
“You know it’s always going to be fine Char,” I said, hugging her back.
“Yay!”
“Roll up! Roll up! We have dogs in rolls right here!” Frank yelled across the garden. “Girls get your asses over here to the rest of us!”
Char and I burst out laughing.
“I mean it! Don’t make me come over there!” Frank shouted, sounding a lot like Gerard for a moment.
We finally stopped laughing after a few minutes.
“I think we should get Frank a job at a fairground,” Char giggled as we headed over and sat down on the grass with Mikey, Gerard, Ray and Bob.
Frank was currently trying to persuade the dogs to get into the rolls. It wasn’t going very well, but it made us all laugh. Ray even got out his phone to record the whole ordeal. We know where that will end up soon enough.
Five minutes later Frank had succeeded in his little mission – he finished one hot dog.
“I did it!” he yelled victoriously.
“Okay, if he gets a job at a fairground, we have to make sure it isn’t at a hog dog vendor.” I whispered to Charlotte.
“Poor kids will have to wait three days for a hot dog,” she giggled.
“Maybe you can put my brother in a bun and pass him off as a hot dog?” I wondered aloud, sending both of us into another fit of laughter.
Gerard’s ringtone blasted through the air, stopping the laughing fit.
“Ooh yay!” Gee jumped up. “I’ll be back,” he said and disappeared into the house.
Frank came over, “Awh, but…but he was supposed to get my special hot dog!” he whined.
“You two are so alike,” Mikey observed.
“Maybe they’re secretly brothers?” Char wondered.
“Or lovers.” Ray added, making the rest of us laugh.
Frank stood up in front of us, his expression solemn. “How did you know?” He asked Ray.
“You’re not that good at hiding it,” Ray answered.
“Maybe cause he’s my Geebear!” Frank cried, “I don’t want to hide him!”
The rest of us burst out laughing at Frank’s drama.
“I love you too Frankie,” Gee came up behind him, giving him a bear hug.
“Hehe,” Frank grinned innocently.
“Who were you on the phone with?” Bob asked, bringing everyone’s attention back to the reason why Gee had left.
Gerard just smiled sheepishly.
“The comic book store?” Ray guessed.
Gee shook his head, still smiling.
“Lyn-Z?” I asked.
His eyes lit up and the mention of his name, but he shook his head.
“The salon?” Frank added.
That earned a playful punch from Gerard.
“Who was it Gee? The guessing could get worse.” Mikey pointed out.
Gerard took a deep breath, like he was about to announce something.
“Let’s go to the fairground,” Char said, making us both laugh.
The guys just looked at us like we were insane. Maybe we were, I thought.
“Go on?” Bob prompted.
Gerard took another breath, “It was a guy from Eyeball Records.”
“What?” we all screamed at him simultaneously.
“Well, what happened?” Ray asked him.
“He wants to meet us tomorrow.” Gee explained. “They want to get a feel of us to see if we have a good personality to go with good music.”
“Wait, they liked the demo?” Mikey asked, his eyes wide with surprise.
“Yeah they did!” Gee said excitedly.
A chorus of oh my gods and excited chit chat broke out in our little group.
“You okay with them going to this?” Char whispered at me.
“Why shouldn’t I be?”
She gave me a look. “You know why.”
“It’s great!” I smiled. I was genuinely happy for all them.
“Girl’s day out tomorrow!” Char said louder so everyone could hear her.
Frank winked at her, then shouted two words that made the barbecue so much better than it was already before, for the band and for me and Char who couldn’t be happier for them, “Road Trip!”
