Training always finished around lunchtime, which is about one in the afternoon. After that everyone was free to do what they pleased, if they didn't have chores or cleaning duty that is. You decided to go out on your maneuver gear for a while. You loved whizzing through the trees and looking out over the horizon. In your opinion, the best thing about being a Scout was just being able to see outside humanity's walls. You knew what was on the other side and although it was dangerous you also thought that the whole world must be extremely beautiful, and filled with extraordinary things. One day you wanted to see those things for yourself... Even so, you doubted that you'd ever be able to. Although you were a dreamer, you weren't exactly what you'd call an optimist. You were out until the sun began to set, and as you saw the orangey glow begin to fade its way across the sky, you decided to head back to the castle.

Once you got back you went up to your room, put away your gear, took off your belts, and sat down to rest. It was currently summer, the heat made a lot of people tired earlier so they spent most their time just chatting and socialising in their bunkers. Compared to everyone else you were a bit of a lone wolf. You did used to have a close friend while you were a trainee. You'd known each other since you were only five years old. Her name was Katie. Katie wasn't exactly the strongest person you knew, but she was filled with kindness and would follow her friends anywhere. For a long amount of your lives it had just been the two of you, you were like partners in crime, always together. Inseparable.

When you were around 12 years old you decided that you wanted to train to be a soldier when you were older. You explained to Katie that you knew the two of you always stayed together, but she didn't have to follow you down this path. She appreciated your concern for her but she insisted that she was staying with you and you could watch over each other. She agreed that life without so much as seeing what was outside these walls was hardly worth living. When you completed your training you both came top ten. You were 6th place and Katie was 9th. Then the time to choose your regiment came. You realised that you were allowed to be part of the military police and live a life of luxury in the capital, but you both decided that wasn't for you. You followed your plan through and joined the Scout Regiment.

Katie wasn't here anymore... Although you were the better fighter out of the two of you, she would be the one to save your life. It was your first expedition outside the walls. It was particularly misty and this made it extremely difficult to see Titans. You both stayed in formation until suddenly a sixteen metre abnormal cut you off. You tried to fight it, but it had quick reflexes and it grabbed you. Katie managed to save you just in time, cutting the titan's hand off before you reached it's mouth. This was at the expense of her own life though... The last thing she said to you was "(f/n)... Explore, Enjoy life!"

Her sacrifice meant you were able to escape that Titan. And although you could have just froze with shock and trauma, with her memory in mind, you pushed on. Your squad leader asked where 'Hughes' was, you didn't have to say anything for him to understand... The expression on your face was enough... From then on you trained harder and harder, becoming more fit, more fast, and more agile. You quickly worked your way up the ranks and became the best fighter in your squad. This got you noticed by Commander Erwin, and he insisted that you leave your current squad and join one of more skilled soldiers. You were still full of grief over your friend... You knew that you'd never find someone like her again. She was the kind of person that there would only ever be one of. This grief is what powered you to do well and try your best. Slowly but surely, you began to get your cheerful personality back. Your humour returned and you stopped shutting yourself off to everyone. Now, instead of Katie's memory making you feel sadness, it made you feel motivation. You were determined to do what she had said to you. "Explore...", "Enjoy life..". And that's just what you were going to do.

Once your mind had finished wandering through thought, you decided to get some sleep. You were fairly sure that there was no training tomorrow ...which meant it was cleaning day. You hardly ever got a day off but you didn't really mind. You didn't like to be bored. You got changed, folded away your cloths, and lay down your head to rest. "I'll never forget you, remember that." you said with a slight smile as you drifted off to sleep.
