•Chapter 10•
Thursday, May 30th, 2013
Over the next few weeks, Link and I grew closer and closer. I found out a lot of interesting things about him. Like, for example, he doesn't like spicy food or bossy people. I mean, he almost beat up a boy in our gym class for ordering Ninian to get the soccer balls. He hates the whole big-guy-stepping-on-the-little-guy concept.
I remember once, I was sitting in the floor of the basement, laying on my stomach and playing my DS, when he got up and started shouting at some newscaster that was blaring on the TV screen.
Things with Mist didn't get better. She started to notice how close I was getting to Link and began avoiding us like the plague. Even resorting to skipping lunch. I tried to play down our friendship around other people, but Link didn't get it. Until one day I explained it to him. That was a huge mistake.

4:00 pm
Link hadn't come to school today. I wanted to check on him.
"I'm home!" I yelled to the empty house. My mom was probably at her knitting class and my brother was probably at sports.
"Link?" I walk over to the basement door and open it. "Link?!" I run down the stairs and look at the basement. He wasn't there. But there was a sticky note on the TV. I walked over and snatched it and read it. It was in another language. How was I- it suddenly clicked. I could read it.
"Zelda,
I'm ruining your life. I have to leave. Don't follow me. You'll see me again some day. It's just that day can't be today. We still have our mission. I love you.
Love, Link"

4:30 pm
"He just left! He's gone!" I yelled into the phone. I was in tears. I hoped no one noticed. Lynn was sitting next to me and I was on the phone with Mia. Lynn was reading the note.
"But....why?" Mia repeated.
"He thinks he's ruining my life!"
"I don't understand. How is he ruining your life?"
"I don't know!"
Lynn spoke up. "Do you think this has something to do with Mist?"
I froze. Mia fell silent.
"I'm going to her house." I said.
"Wha-" I hung up before Mia could finish that.
"What exactly are you going to say?"
"Nothing." I got up and ran down the stairs and out the front door, slamming the door behind me. Lynn dashed after me.
"Zelda, think long and carefully about what you're about to do."
"No! Link could be in trouble and it'll be her fault!"
"We don't even know if it IS her fault. I mean, he could've meant-"
"He couldn't have meant anything else." I turned down Mist's street. Mia was running towards us in the opposite direction. She was dragging Ninian with her. I walked up the front steps on Mist's porch. And walked over and knocked on the door.
"Zelda!" Mia ran up to me. "This is a really bad idea!"
"I hate my mouth." Lynn muttered.
"So do we." Ninian said.
The door opened. A tall, muscular boy with shaggy blue hair stood in the doorway. "Oh hey. You want Mist, right?"
"Hi, Ike." I ignored Mia, who was blushing like crazy. "Can we see Mist?"
"Uh, yeah. Hold on." He turned around and yelled, "Mist! The girls are here to see you!"
"What?" Mist came running down the stairs, looking confused. Ike walked away and Mist took his place.
"Mist." I said
"You're here to apologize?" Mist asked.
"No. What did you do to Link?"
"What?" She looked utterly confused.
"Link! He's gone! He said he was ruining my life!"
Mist's eyes widened. "So? I didn't kidnap him or anything."
"The only bad part of my life is you not talking to me! And why aren't you talking to me? Because of him! And he knows that! Don't you see? It's your fault!"
"What?! That's ridiculous! I wouldn't be mad if you had kept your fucking promise!! Don't give me this shit, Zelda! It's not my fault. It's yours!"
"You didn't need to get so mad! That song meant nothing! You overreacted!"
"No. I didn't. You are such a bitch."
She slammed the door on my face.

9:30 pm
I lay on my bed, staring at the wall. A tear was running down my face.
Why was I so upset? We barely knew each other! He was just some crazy cosplayer. He wasn't my friend.
I had to keep telling myself that. At first, it worked. Now, not so much.
Ping!
I shot up. Did something just hit my window?
Ping!
I walked over and opened it. I looked out into the dark.
"Zelda!"
"What? Who's there?!"
"It's me, Link!"
"Link?!"
"Yeah." I could tell he was smiling.
"You came back!"
"No. I didn't. I'm going to leave again."
My heart dropped. "What?"
"I came to get you. We need to complete our mission. Run away with me."
"What?!"
"Please?"
I don't know what made me do it. I didn't think about how this would effect my family, friends, or school. I just grabbed my backpack and emptied it. I filled it with a few articles of clothes, money, pens, my phone and its charger, hygiene products, and a photo album.
I threw on some pants, a shirt, and a sweatshirt. I pulled on sneakers.
I quietly walked over to the front door, avoiding the creaky parts. Tomorrow, my parents will find a note saying I had run away, not to look for me, I was safe, and I was with Link. I promised I would come back.
I locked the door behind me. Link was waiting on the front steps of the porch.
I ran over to him and wrapped my arms around his neck. I hugged him tightly.
"Someone missed me."
"No I didn't. Shut up."
We hugged under the stars, my life changing, altering, right where I stood.
