Graduation Day Goodbyes

Warmth fills my heart like never before,
And that warmth radiates through my smile.
The unexpected visitor expresses the same comfort.
I run, then kneel next to her.
She wraps her small arms around my neck,
And I swing her around.
For this one moment, I feel protective and protected.
I know I'd do anything for this little girl.
Daydreams of a possible life fill my head,
But I know it can't be.
I smile as I set her down, and keep it as I walk away.
I felt like my life was collapsing,
But I'd never let her see me cry.

A/n: This poem is dedicated to my ex-boyfriend's sister. I'm the baby of my family, so she's the closest I've gotten to being someone's big sister... I think that's explanation enough.
